For my Girl Scout Gold Award Project I decided to work with my local township on our community park- The Larkin Park. I chose to specifically work on the path because it was something I used throughout my childhood. However, it has not been maintained and the township was notified that they have ownership of the path only after I inquired about the gold award project to improve the path. This path is used by children, parents, and other people in my community to avoid the fast 55 mph road by using the path from a neighborhood road which is 25 mph. The path goes from that 25 mph road straight to the park. The path is 10 feet wide but only 36 inches in the middle were walkable. The overall purpose of the path was to be a safer alternative to taking a fast, busy, and other dangerous roads to get to the park.Â
Inaccessibility of a path that connects my community park and a neighborhood road
Problems with the path included exposed roots, unlevel ground, steep bridges, soft ground
Unable to ride a bike on the path or use any mobility aid or stroller without risk of injury
Lack of information about the local plants and animals on the path
Unmarked conservation easement
