Signals and traffic control systems are very important for the safety of motorists and pedestrians on the roadways of our cities. At busy intersections, where traffic generates a lot of vehicle and pedestrian flow, just using manual signals is not enough to ensure the orderly flow of traffic because of the potential for human error. Modern automatic systems can help to maintain safe and orderly traffic flows, and most are built around embedded computers (also called microcontrollers) which increase both cost and complexity. The target for this project is to develop a simple traffic light controller using basic electronic components. In this design, a digital timer 555 integrated circuit generates the pulse for the clock, while the CD4017 decade counter controls the sequence of outputs. To represent the various traffic lights, and to make it easy to see when the lights are turning on and off, I will be using LEDs. Making this system reliable, simple, and easy to follow is a key goal of this project.
