The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact 1
IPTS Standard 7K) appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole. I have used this to measure the classes test scores, as well as students individual scores.
Performance indicators:
"maintains useful and accurate records of student work and performance" While completing my test analysis, I was able to keep the students grades in check and have the ability to see their growth.
"uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes" My test analysis will allow me to view the students progress as well as their progress throughout the whole semester. This gives me a brief insight on what should be covered and reinforced while going through my future lessons.
"appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole" Formal and informal assessments were used to evaluate understanding, progress, and performance. Each assessment allows me to see the students progress and the concepts they're understanding. This will allow me to correctly instruction my classroom throughout the next chapter.
Artifact 2
Analyzing Art in The Battle of Marathon
i. I created an artifact that involves analyzing The Battle of Marathon through works of art. The activity involves students examining different artistic representations of the battle and interpreting the artist's message about the event. The purpose of the activity is to encourage students to think critically about the ways in which art can convey historical information and to deepen their understanding of the significance of the Battle of Marathon. The artifact was produced as part of a history lesson plan for a high school class.
ii. The artifact that I created, which involves having students analyze The Battle of Marathon through works of art, aligns with Illinois Professional Teaching Standards (IPTS) Standard 7R) uses assessment strategies and devices that are nondiscriminatory, and take into consideration the impact of disabilities, methods of communication, cultural background, and primary language on measuring knowledge and performance of students. This standard emphasizes the importance of using multiple forms of assessment to guide instruction and improve student learning. As well as, Performance Indicator Standard 7A) states that teachers should "use a variety of assessment tools and strategies to evaluate and support the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills."
Through this artifact, students are not only asked to analyze works of art related to The Battle of Marathon, but they are also required to think critically and use their problem-solving skills to interpret the meaning behind the artwork. By doing so, they are demonstrating their ability to use multiple forms of assessment, including visual analysis and critical thinking skills. Additionally, this artifact helps me as a teacher to evaluate my students' understanding of the historical event and their ability to interpret art. By assessing my students' interpretations of the artwork, I can adjust my instruction to better support their learning and help them develop their critical thinking skills. Overall, this artifact aligns well with IPTS Standard 7R, 7A and demonstrates progress towards meeting these standards.
iii. As a future teacher, I learned the importance of incorporating art into historical analysis through the creation of this artifact. Through researching and selecting various works of art that depict The Battle of Marathon, I gained a deeper understanding of the significance of this battle and the ways in which art can be used to convey historical events. This artifact has also taught me the value of analyzing primary sources, such as artwork, to better understand historical events and the perspectives of those who witnessed them.
In my future classroom, I plan to use this artifact as a way to engage students in historical analysis and encourage them to think critically about the ways in which historical events are depicted in art. By analyzing different works of art and discussing the various perspectives and messages conveyed, students can develop their critical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of historical events. Additionally, incorporating art into historical analysis can help students to better relate to and engage with the past, making it more accessible and relevant to their lives.
