The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Artifact 1 Flipped Project Artifact
What is the artifact? The artifact is my flipped project. It follows the IPTS Standards 5I) uses multiple teaching strategies, including adjusted pacing and flexible grouping, to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and performance capabilities and; 5J) monitors and adjusts strategies in response to feedback from the student.
What does it contain? The artifact contains my flipped project video and quiz.
When and why was it produced? It was produced in April for a class project.
What is the importance of the Artifact? It allows for students to learn the differences between primary and secondary sources. What these sources look like, and where to find them.
how does it show evidence of understanding of the standard? It shows evidence, because it allows for them to learn what the differences are and then take a quiz on it to test what they have learned.
What does it say about progress towards meeting the standard? It says that the student can now analyze the difference between a primary source and secondary source due to the content I have taught them and what they were assessed on.
What was learned? The differences between primary and secondary sources, what they look like, and where to find them.
How the learning is important to development as a teacher? This allows me to see if the students can learn from what I have taught them after they take the google quiz. If they achieve then I have been able to teach them well.
How the artifact connects to the candidate’s future classroom? It connects to my future classroom due to it being a part of the history standards.
What I learned from creating this artifact is that I can successfully follow an Illinois priority learning standard and teach someone based off of it.
Artifact 2
i. This lesson plan is a document created by me for a World History class for high school sophomores. The focus of the lesson is on imperialism and colonization, specifically on the impact colonization had on Mexico. The lesson aims to help students understand the difference between imperialization and colonization and the role that imperialism and colonization played in shaping the modern world.
The lesson plan is designed to meet Illinois Learning Standards, including SS.9-12.H.14, which analyzes geographic and cultural forces that have resulted in conflict and cooperation, and SS.9-12.H.10, which identifies and analyzes ways in which marginalized communities are represented in historical sources and seeks out sources created by historically oppressed peoples.
The lesson plan includes both formative and summative assessments, including discussion questions and SOAPStone analysis of primary sources, as well as a final essay on how Cortes entered into conflict with the Aztecs and what he thought about Aztec culture and the city of Tenochtitlan. The lesson plan also incorporates differentiation and support for students with IEPs or 504 plans.
The sequence of learning activities includes an introduction video on imperialism and colonization, a presentation on Hernan Cortes, and primary source analysis of The Second Letter of Hernan Cortes, with a focus on SOAPStone analysis. The lesson concludes with a summary of main ideas and an assignment for students to find and analyze a document related to Spanish history. The lesson is designed to take two class periods.
ii. The lesson plan presented above shows evidence of understanding the Illinois Learning Standards SS.9-12.H.14 and SS.9-12.H.10 as well as IPTS Standard 5C) knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources. The lesson plan addresses the objective of the standard by teaching students to identify the cause and effects of imperialism and colonization and analyze historical sources created by historically oppressed peoples. The importance of the artifact is that it provides a comprehensive lesson plan that utilizes primary and secondary historical sources to teach students about the impact of colonization on Mexico. This also includes Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5J) states that the competent teacher "monitors and adjusts strategies in response to feedback from the student." Following this lesson plan will allow for a better monitor on students and adjusting it for future use. Overall, the lesson plan provides a clear and structured approach to teaching students about the impact of colonization on Mexico while meeting the Illinois Learning Standards.
iii. Through creating this lesson plan, I have learned the importance of incorporating prior knowledge and differentiation in the classroom. By assessing prior knowledge through an engaging question, I can better tailor my lesson to meet the needs of my students. Additionally, by incorporating differentiation in the form of group work and individualized support for students with IEPs or 504 plans, I can ensure that all students have access to the content. Overall, this lesson plan connects to my future classroom by emphasizing the importance of understanding historical events and their impact on different cultures. By incorporating differentiation and academic language, I can ensure that all students have access to the content and are able to engage with it at their own level.
