Background
Horizon is the first pre-designed neighborhood to be built at 9,000 feet elevation on Powder Mountain, Utah. It consists of 30 cabins ranging in size from 1,000- 3,000 square feet, along with a series of strategically placed garages, and a communal lodge called the ‘Pioneer Cabin’ for the use of the homeowners. Buyers choose from four typologies, which either follow the contours like mountain goats, or are cross-grain, projecting off the mountainside like extreme skiers. The cabins are then customized for each owner.
Phase 1: Diagrams
The diagrams focus on what makes our building unique. The design is not unique without the topography that surrounds it. The diagrams and models are meant to emphasize the protruding nature by buyers being able to choose from different typologies, which either follow the contours like mountain goats, or are cross-grain, projecting off the mountainside like extreme skiers. The cabins are then customized to each owner's specific needs and wants.
Phase 2: Diagrams and Models
Despite relying on the unique topography and style from the owners. There is a more idea shown through the making of the building. The idea is that the pieces can fit into an opening creating your own perspective on how you want your building to look. To highlight this, we began to find ways to create a toy for children that required a creative mind aspect while still keeping the idea of the exsiting building.
Phase 3: Renderings and Models
The final building model offers a creative way to test a person's/ child's ability to come up with a design of their own. This toy was then integrated into a Rocky, Mountainist landscape that further represents the Neighborhood House topography and need of creativity and typologies.
