Most students know me as Mr. Zach. I am a BFA graduate from MSU Denver, completing my student teaching at Creativity, Challenge, Community (C3) Denver Public School and a Denver-based visual artist with deep roots in Colorado communities.
My teaching philosophy is centered on hands-on, student-driven learning. I use approaches such as Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), Social Emotional Academic Learning (SEAL), and culturally responsive teaching to create an inclusive classroom where all students feel supported and encouraged to explore.

Students are given choice in materials and ideas, time to experiment, and opportunities to collaborate and reflect. Through art-making, they build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of self.

Sammi the Sloth
A playful yet intentional classroom management tool that helps shift the tone of accountability from teacher-directed to community-centered. By positioning Sammi as the one “watching” for positive behaviors, students are invited to engage in routines. Sammi becomes a neutral and supportive presence that reinforces expectations in a way that feels approachable and encouraging, especially for younger learners. This strategy helps build a positive classroom culture where students feel recognized for their efforts, and where responsibility is shared. Through small rewards and acknowledgments, Sammi celebrates students who demonstrate focus, care for materials, and respect for the studio environment, ultimately supporting independence, consistency, and a sense of pride in their work habits.
