Dr. Gu Leads a Special Issue on Massive MIMO

Dr. Yujie Gu has been named lead guest editor for one upcoming special issue of the Digital Signal Processing Journal (DSP).

Titled “Source Localization in Massive MIMO”, the special issue of DSP Journal covers recent contributions in high-accuracy localization in massive MIMO, which provides location-based services in our daily lives beyond the function of communications. The issue is seeking research and overview papers on localization using massive MIMO in indoor localization, vehicle navigation, radar-communication coexistence, security authentication in Internet of Things (IoT), massive UAV-to-ground communication and localization, through-the-wall localization, imaging and pattern recognition, etc. Also serving as guest editors of this issue are active reseachers from Zhejiang University, University of York, Osaka Prefecture University, and Chalmers University of Technology.

The special issue will be published in November 2019.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has selected a research paper that was co-authored by Dr. Yujie Gu to receive the 2019 IET Communications Premium Award. The Premium Awards are given by the IET to recognize the best research papers published during the previous two years.

The award-winning paper, titled “Compressive sensing based coprime array direction-of-arrival estimation,” was published in the IET Communications in August 2017. This paper develops a novel approach to enable coprime arrays to perform direction-of-arrival estimation with a high number of degrees of freedom at low computational complexity. A key contribution is to use random compressive sensing kernels to compress the received signals of coprime array with a large aperture to lower-dimensional measurements.

Dr. Gu Elected Member of IEEE SAM Technical Committee

Dr. Yujie Gu, Senior Radar Scientist at Aptiv Advanced Engineering Center, Agoura Hills, CA, was elected a member of the Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He will serve a three-year term starting in January 2021. A longtime associate member of the committee, Dr. Gu’s election is attributed to an outstanding contributions within SAM technical areas. He has published more than 60 journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, which have received 2200 citations with an H-index of 21.

IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. As the IEEE’s first society, the Signal Processing Society is the world’s premier professional society for signal processing scientist and professionals since 1948. Technical committees in the Signal Processing Society are actively involved in awards, conferences, publications and educational activities, and provide technical advice to the Society’s leadership. The SAM Technical Committee consists of approximately 40 members and 20 associate members who promote activities within the technical fields of sensor array processing and multi-channel statistical signal processing.

Dr. Gu is recognized internationally for his expertise in signal processing with broad applications to radar and wireless communications. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and is actively involved in numerous professional societies. Dr. Gu is a Subject Editor-in-Chief of Electronics Letters for Signal Processing, and Associate Editor for Signal Processing. Dr. Gu's recent professional activities include serving as a Special Sessions Co-Chair of the 2020 IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Workshop. Dr. Gu is the recipient of the 2019 IET Communications Premium Award.

Congratulations to Dr. Chengwei Zhou (my first co-supervised PhD student) for receiving 2021 IEEE SPS Young Author Best Paper Award for the paper co-authored with Yujie Gu, Xing Fan, Zhiguo Shi, Guoqiang Mao, and Yimin D. Zhang, “Direction-of-Arrival Estimation for Coprime Array via Virtual Array Interpolation”, IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, November 2018.

Dr. Gu Elected Member of IEEE SPTM Technical Committee

Dr. Yujie Gu was elected a member of the Signal Processing Theory and Methods (SPTM) Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He will serve a three-year term starting in January 2023. A longtime associate member of the committee, Dr. Gu’s election is attributed to an outstanding contributions within SPTM technical areas.
