(on-going)
Introduction to the Group
How many supervisors are there in the group?
Currently, only me. In the near future, it should be the same. Additionally, I support/encourage the mentees in finding other mentors/supervisors with diverse backgrounds, either due to the requirements of specific projects or merely for career development.
Group Culture
How to address me?
Initially, "Prof. Yue", "Dr. Yue", "越老师", or else is okay. Afterwards, please just call me "Siyao" or "思瑶".
Working language
A combination of Chinese and English, partly because NHI is a collaboration with an institute abroad, i.e., the University of Helsinki. It is okay that your (spoken) English is not fluent enough at the beginning. But I hope you can improve it and be more confident when departing for your next position.
For non-Chinese speakers, there is no problem communicating in English in the group. We can assist you in working and living in China.
About gifts and some other usually "unpleasant" issues
Gifts of any kind are ABSOLUTELY NOT allowed or welcomed, especially when you approach us and before you get the degree and graduate.
We don't drink alcohol (including beer) at any dining party organized by us. If you like it, feel free to enjoy. But still, strong alcohols are not recommended with respect to health.
We don't have meetings or discussions at night, on weekends, or on holidays. In special cases like experimental campaigns or traveling to other time zones, it might have to be flexible occasionally. But you are always welcome to raise the issue about work hours for yourself or the whole group.
Hierarchy
To be frank, it is a bit unrealistic that there is no hierarchy at all. It is unavoidable that there is a hierarchy where supervisors are somehow above the mentees, e.g., regarding assignment, management, etc.
There is no hierarchy among senior and junior group members in our group. In some projects, we do expect supervision relationships between members in addition to PI.
I think it might be better not to address senior (older) students as "Shixiong" or "Shijie". Usually, each student will mainly work on their own project, at least for the key part of the project. Truly, we are a collaborating team. And it is always recommended to help each other, especially when you are working on related topics or using common or similar tools.
Graduate Student Training (not finished yet)
Research Directions for Students
What are the expectations for students’ work?
Currently, the main format of scientific achievements that the group finds valuable is a journal article. I hope the students can always aim high, considering both technical and time limitations. Publishing in high-impact journals is good and one of our aims, but the key is to do valuable works.
Can students graduate on time?
Let's work together to achieve it! Principally, I am against deliberately holding students beyond the expected graduate years. But the work should indeed be good enough to obtain the degrees.
What abilities does the group aim to develop in students?
For doing high-quality studies and for career development
