Mental Peak Performance in High-Intensity Sports
This workshop took place at a premier Kick-boxing and Hyrox gym in Amsterdam, an environment defined by extreme physical intensity. The community faced a dual psychological challenge: elite athletes suffered from "pre-race insomnia" and performance anxiety, while new members often felt "de-motivated" or intimidated by the grueling nature of the training. The goal was to help participants find a "still center" within explosive, high-stakes movement.
Master Yan introduced a "Warrior Mindfulness" framework, moving from active physical meditation to deep cognitive deconstruction:
Moving Zen (Introduction): The session opened with Meditation in Motion. By practicing mindfulness during physical action, athletes learned that "Zen" is not about sitting still; it is a high-performance state of flow that can be maintained even during a kick-boxing match or a heavy lift.
The Two Pillars of a Calm Mind:
Total Awareness (Be Aware of Everything): Master Yan taught the "Power of the Present." By becoming acutely aware of every single movement—the breath, the placement of a foot, the tension in a muscle—the mind is forced out of "anxiety mode" (which lives in the future) and into "performance mode" (which lives in the now).
The Illusionary Perspective: To combat the paralyzing fear of failure, she introduced the concept of "Everything is like a Dream". By viewing the competition or the high-pressure moment as a "dream-like play," athletes could detach from their ego’s fear, allowing them to compete with more freedom, courage, and a lighter heart.
Breath-Work for the Physical Body: A specific technique was taught to bridge meditation with physical training, allowing athletes to use their breath to "reset" their nervous system mid-workout, preventing high-intensity exertion from turning into mental panic.
Dissolving Performance Anxiety: Competitive athletes gained a specific mental "off-switch" for pre-competition insomnia, replacing racing thoughts with a grounding awareness of the present moment.
Inclusive Motivation: New members learned to regulate their "intimidation response," using movement-awareness to stay focused on their own progress rather than the intensity of the room.
The "Warrior's Peace" in Daily Life: Participants found that the ability to stay calm while being physically pushed translated immediately to their professional lives, helping them handle "high-pressure hits" at work with the same poise as a boxing match.
Optimized Potential: Trainers were equipped with a new vocabulary to guide their students, helping them unlock maximum physical potential by first mastering the "inner voice" of the mind.
