Scoring / Judging
Qualifiers - Peer Judged
Zones
Athletes will judge each other at qualifiers and record which zone the climber reached on each attempt.
Climbs start in zone 0. The climber must get both feet on the wall before moving into zone 1.
This climber would score zone 2 if they were to fall off now since they have control of a hold in zone 2.
Climbers must control a hold in the zone or they would score in the lower zone.
Athletes will have as many attempts as desired on as many routes as desired within the 3 hour climbing window.
The top 4 scores will be used to determine the climber's division and their overall score.
Finals - Official Judges
Holds Reached
Match the highest hold reached with the numbers listed on the route map.
This climber currently has a score of 26.
+ = Positive Movement
When a climber makes a positive movement towards the next handhold, without reaching the next hold, add a + to the score.
If this climber falls right now without reaching the next hold, they would score 24+.
- = Usable Surface
When a climber touches the useful surface of the next hold but does not gain control of that hold, you would record a - for that hold.
This climber is about to fall without control of hold number 27 and would therefore score a 27-.
Scoring Examples
As you watch the following examples remember that positive movement is a +, while usable surface is a -.
Climbing
Start
Starts can be marked with one or two holds. You must lift both feet off the ground before moving off of the starting hold(s).
Once your feet are off the ground, your attempt has started. Do NOT step back down.
Finish
You must demonstrate control of the finish hold with both hands for 3 seconds.
Out of Bounds - Attempt ends
Quick draws - do not use by hands or feet
Bolt holes - keep your fingers out
Do not touch black tape or anything past it
You may go past black tape as long as nothing is touched
Red tape - no holds or volumes past red tape may be used
You may use wall surfaces past red tape as foot holds
Calling a technical - eg: hold spins
If a hold spins while you are climbing, you have 2 choices:
Call “technical” immediately, come down, rest and try again after the hold is fixed
Move past it (tell someone to fix it after your climb), no second attempt will be allowed
