Stick Group Activity
Prior to the spring break trip our class did an activity to get us to work together. This activity involved all of us to hold a stick with two fingers and lower it to the ground. At first this task seemed overly easy but we soon found out how hard it is to work together when the sick was raised over all of our heads. We couldn't manage to lower the stick until we had people take the position as leader and guide the rest of the group to success using verbal commands. By listening and working as a team we lowered the stick to the ground. This activity showed us the importance of a leader in group activities.
Why we NEED community leaders
Community leaders take responsibility for the well-being and improvement of their communities. Community leaders have the power to think about and organize around many issues: youth development, economic growth, the environment -- etc. While leaders don't necessarily have all the tools to solve these complex issues, they have the power to assign and delegate responsibilities to the right team members.
During our HSB Spring break service, we had an opportunity to practice leadership around their Iowa City community; from helping run a youth lego convention to mentoring local youth during a spring break program at Alexander Elementary.
Why it's Important To Be Adaptive
Not everything during our service trip went to plan. Somedays even the best plans can get messed up. During spring break our group had to adapt more than once. From cleaning out a barn to playing kickball, having Mercer Park cancel on us. everyone in our group had to be flexible. Being adaptable is a trait of great leadership, and it's something everyone in our group got to work on over the course of our trip.
