According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Homicide, homicide is the fifth leading cause of death for American Indian and Alaska Native women between ages 25 and 34
The movement MMIW, or Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, brings awareness to missing and murdered native women
Indigenous women in Canada are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than any other women.
The National Congress of American Indians reported that around 84.3% of Native women experience violence and 56% of Native women experience sexual violence (mainly committed by non-Native men)
According to the Urban Indian Health Institute, 5,712 cases of MMIWG, or missing and murdered woman and girls, were reported in 2016, but only 116 of them were logged in DOJ database
Across 71 selected cities, 25% were missing persons cases, 56% were murder cases, and 19% has unknown status.
