The U.S. army has been inside Afghanistan for over 20 years. In August 2021, Biden is pulling out the troops.
The U.S. army initially engaged to attack Al Qaeda, the organization that organized and carried out the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers, yet has stayed and has been trying to prevent the Taliban from having control. The U.S. has also been trying to “modernize” --or Westernize-- Afghanistan and the Middle East through their extended stay.
Now that the U.S. army is pulling out, the Taliban is becoming very restrictive again. The controls they are putting in place are based on Sharia Law (Islamic Law), and they intend to restrict women’s rights.
Since the U.S. has been gone, there have been suicide bombers and other attacks at the Kabul Airport, killing at least 183, and injuring over 200.
The U.S. has long been in conflict regarding whether the army should leave Afghanistan or remain. Since we are leaving, we can see the consequences of the Taliban regaining control; however, if we stayed longer the issues would remain and it would continue to be a Forever War.
Because of the Taliban, many Afghans are fleeing to the U.S.--specifically the California Bay Area and other major points of entry. The U.S. will have to handle the new refugee population quickly; the author thinks they have a responsibility to aid those coming because it is partially the U.S.’s fault.
