SEL is how children and adults learn to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
On October 24, 2017, the Council for Elementary and Secondary Education endorsed RI SEL Standards: Competencies for School and Life Success (English and Spanish). Districts are encouraged to follow these standards and implement them in classrooms at all levels, for all students. SEL is NOT "one more thing", but connects to all instruction and supports academic rigor. SEL skills are important for ALL!
In RI we adopted the CASEL Standards in developing our statewide SEL Standards.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is a trusted source for knowledge about high-quality, evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL). CASEL supports educators and policy leaders and enhances the experiences and outcomes for all PreK-12 students.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) needs comprehensive, developmentally appropriate learning standards to identify what a district wants students to learn and be able to do. Standards are especially important for SEL. They establish common language in an area that may be less familiar than math or reading to many district personnel, students, and parents.
