For new and returning ASL learners, this club provides a welcoming and inclusive space for people of all skill levels to learn and practice ASL. The club focuses on introducing new signs through fun and engaging games, allowing participants to challenge themselves by learning new games or helping teach familiar ones to beginners. Amanda highlights the beauty of ASL as a language, its importance in fostering inclusivity, and its power to build meaningful connections.
Through these activities, members make new friends, especially at Tops, while celebrating ASL as a rich and expressive form of communication. This spring, Ruthie and her students will draw a lot together, read and talk about illustrated books, sequential art, and graphic novels and have a great time making themselves and each other laugh with their drawings. If students are interested, they will have the opportunity to make copies of their work and “publish” their zines, comics or character cards and have a “book fair” with the other students in the class.
Ruthie Nicklaus is a professional freelance illustrator and a Children’s Book writer and illustrator (and a TOPS mom), who most loves to draw kid antics and scenes of family chaos and humor. Kids, cats, dogs, coffee, school buses, piles of laundry, and for some reason, chickens, show up frequently in her art.
