Dr. Douglas D. Young

Cornelia Brackenridge Talbot Term Distinguished Associate Professor of Chemistry

Doug Young is originally from Longmont, Colorado and attended college at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He obtained a B.S. in both Chemistry and Biology while researching metal-containing liquid crystals, as well as Drosophila development. He then received his Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry in 2008 at North Carolina State University under the supervision of Dr. Alexander Deiters. His research focused on the photochemical regulation of biological processes and the synthesis and investigation of small molecules for biological screening. Upon the completion of his Ph.D. he was awarded a NIH postdoctoral fellowship to continue his studies at The Scripps Research Institute under the guidance of Dr. Peter Schultz, developing therapeutic applications for the in vivo incorporation of unnatural amino acids. Doug is excited to join the William & Mary Department of Chemistry in the Fall of 2011 and plans to continue his research on the interface of biology and chemistry.
