Multiple Literacies & Goal Setting
On this page, I demonstrate how I used multiple literacies and multimodal strategies to support my writing process and achieve my writing goals. Throughout the semester, I learned that effective writing is not only about words, but also about using different ways of communicating depending on the audience, purpose, and context.
As an international student, I developed my ability to use multiple literacies, including multilingual writing, reading, and adapting between different languages and communication styles. This helped me better express my ideas and adjust my writing to meet academic expectations. In my Multimodal Literacy Narrative, I wrote, “Using different ways of communicating helped me better express my identity and connect with my audience” (Younes Boudinar, Multimodal Literacy Narrative). This shows that I used my linguistic background as a strength in my writing process.
In addition to language, I also used multimodal elements such as structure, storytelling, and organization to improve my writing. I learned how to present my ideas in a way that is clear, engaging, and effective for the reader. For example, in my assignments, I focused on how the organization of my paragraphs and the flow of my ideas could impact how my message is understood. As I explained in one of my Quick Writes, “Combining different ways of presenting ideas made my writing more effective” (Younes Boudinar, Quick Writes). This demonstrates how I used multiple modes of communication to support my writing goals.
Setting clear goals also played an important role in my development. At the beginning of the semester, my main goal was to improve my clarity and organization. Over time, my goals evolved to include adapting my writing to different audiences and using more advanced strategies, such as rhetorical awareness and revision. These goals helped guide my writing process and allowed me to measure my progress.
I also learned how to connect my use of multiple literacies to my writing process. For example, when writing for an academic audience, I focused on clarity, structure, and formal language. When working on more creative or personal assignments, I used storytelling and personal experiences to engage the reader. This shows that I am able to choose the most effective communication strategies depending on the situation.
Overall, this outcome helped me understand that writing involves multiple literacies and that using different modes of communication can improve the effectiveness of my work. By combining my linguistic background, multimodal strategies, and clear goal setting, I became a more flexible and confident writer. In the future, I will continue to use these skills to adapt my writing to different contexts and audiences.
