Reflections on 5 core competencies
Reflections on 5 core competencies
Description of Competency
Assessing students' learning is an integral part of education; It should be helpful, accurate, and efficient.
Artifact(s)
To learn how to assess student learning, I attended the workshop for certification in the college teaching institute on May 9th, 2019. The workshop covered how to cultivate effective learning environments by promoting student success and engagement and creating inclusive learning spaces. You can find the workshop materials here (schedule and agenda, worksheet for the session addressed assessing student learning).
Artifact(s) Rationale
The workshop was designed to build around experiences in and demonstration of learning in five competency areas including assessing student learning. The topic included: testing, grading, classroom assessment, course design, and portfolio assessment.
Interpretation and Reflection
I learned how to develop learning objectives, and how to determine acceptable assessments of learning from the workshop. Based on what I learned, I designed the class intervention to improve students' understanding of the class expectations for Human Communication. Students used the same rubric, that I used to evaluate students, to assess their peers and their own public speaking. By doing this activity, it was expected that students could articulate the property of good public speaking and how to improve their speech. The detailed project is described on a separate page in this website.
