Council Report 1981-1982
Published in the 1982-1983 Handbook.
The Chairman in his Report thanked the Officers of the Association and those Committee members who were not officials for their valuable contribution to the game in the York and District.
The General Secretary reported that the monthly Council Meetings were reasonably well attended and thanked clubs who offered rooms for the various Committee Meetings held during the year. Tournaments had been reasonably well supported. The “Bagshaw" did well to survive the floods. The "Closed" had attracted a sponsor for the first time and the Tournaments Committee had made a fine effort with the complex organisational problems, created due to there being no tournament secretary. The finals had been completed 45 minutes earlier than scheduled – surely a record!
In the Winter League, Railway 'A' won the First division for the fifth year in succession. Telephones 'D', division five winners last season, won division four this time. Two new clubs were successful in their first year of membership, Sessions 'A' winning division seven and Poppleton 'B' division nine. There are still too many teams turning up short/not at all and sending scores in late. The thorny problems relating to grading and match claiming hopefully will be reduced with new rules at the A.G.M. which should save time at the Monthly Council Meetings, the Press Secretary requests that more comments be given on scorecards or on a separate letter to assist her to compile the weekly report for Saturday's Sports Press.
The Social Secretary reported that although 104 people attended the Buffet/Dance less than 50% of the clubs were represented. Geoff Jackson was the surprise winner of the "Cameron" Trophy.
Competitions were again reasonably well supported. The popular "Charity Pairs" event found new ground when the semi-finals and final were played at Y.G.L., Rufforth Hall. Helen Stephenson and Chris Pollard were the winners and £30 was raised for charity. Railway 'F' and Civil Service 'C' won the team events with Sessions 'A' and Rowntrees 'D' the runners-up.
The 1981 Summer league had gone down well, Fulford Road W.M.C. 'E' being eventual winners. The 1982 entry is 25% down, but this eases administration.
The Coaching section managed to obtain grant aid from the York District Sports Council towards the purchase of two new tables, bringing the number to 11. Betty Norman and Derek Bond are very short of assistance at coaching sessions and would like more qualified coaches and senior players to get involved. Clubs will continue to be asked to supply two players to help out on a rota basis and it is hoped there is more response for this next season.
It was not a good season for our Yorkshire League teams. Three of our seven teams are definitely demoted and one team possibly. There is a shortage of good junior and lady players, compared with other areas of the county.
The President called upon players to promote the sport in York and District by encouraging new members to join their clubs and to encourage new clubs to join the Association - herein lies our future.
