"Very interesting and informative tour of some lesser known sights. Friendly and well informed guide. Enjoyable, and highly recommended."
York's Hidden History led our first tour of York in 2021 and since then have been offering tours to visitors and residents who want to explore the city and learn new things.
Formed by two scientists with a background in teaching and guiding, a fascination with history and a love of learning, York's Hidden History aims are to find new and different ways of showing off the greatest city on Earth.
By running our organisation directly we are able to offer personalized tours that keep the quality high and the costs low. Whether you join one of our regular walks or book a private tour, York's Hidden History has something for everyone.
Our Guides
"Liam was a very informative, friendly and skillful guide. Wonderful, would recommend."
Liam is a palaeontologist who has been a tutor in the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of York since 2011. Liam's love of history, nature, and ancient landscapes led him to start offering tours of the city, and he co-founded York's Hidden History in 2021.
When he's not leading walks, Liam is co-director of the Yorkshire Fossil Festival, and a some-time cricket writer.
"Our tour guide Simon was full of passion about his knowledge of the history of York...a fantastic tour that we would highly recommend."
A native of the county of Yorkshire, Simon has more than 5 years experience working as a guide in the city of York and says he is constantly amazed but how much he is still learning about its buildings and history.
As well as getting to show off the place he loves and meeting new and interesting people, his favourite thing about taking people around the city is the questions that they ask and how they inspire him to think about something new.
Away from tour guiding, Simon is a former meteorologist turned teacher who now works as a personal maths tutor, mostly helping students prepare for their GCSE and A-level exams.
Simon has also had fun turning some of the stories from York's history into a series of children's adventure books aimed at readers aged 8-12. You can find out more about his Claudia Ding books by following the link below.
