July 27, 2023. I was invited to give a talk in 12th Applied Optics and Photonics China (AOPC 2023), Beijing, entitled 'Algorithms and applications of optical chips for computing'. In this talk, I presented our two recent works on computing using integrated photonic chips.

Jan. 2023. I was invited to give a talk entitled 'New Computing in Post Moore Era: Advances and Frontiers of Optical Computing' in 'The Conference of Roadmap of Complexity Science' at Hainan.

Dec. 2022. I was invited to give a presentation in 29th Annual Academic Meeting of Chinese Society of Technology Economics on Dec 18, 2022. My talk title was: AI supports Winter Olympics: Technology and Applications of AI for medicine. 

Dec. 2022. I was invited to give a talk in 2022 Juzhou Symposium of Ophthalmology on Dec 3, 2022. My talk is about using interpretable deep learning to determine the myopia status in peripheral refraction maps. Over 200,000 audience, most are clinicians, have watched the symposium.

• Oct. 2022. Good news from Natural Science Foundation of Chongqing. Our joint research is funded by the Science and Technology Bureau of Chongqing. My partner is Dr. Jun Cao of The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. In this research, we will study the factors and predictive model of postoperative delirium after hip arthroplasty for elderly patients using machine learning.

• Sep. 2022. Good news from National Natural Science Foundation of China. Our research proposal is awarded a general project from NSFC. Jian Shu (Southwest Medical University) and I will jointly lead the project of 'Study of quantitative decision-making for extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma based on small sample and multimodal data'. The award is $74,738/¥520,000. In this project, we will use federal learning and deep learning to diagnose extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

• Jul. 2022. The Ministry of Science and Technology awarded me a Letter of Appreciation for my work and leadership in the 'Key Technologies for Intelligent 2022 Winter Olympics Games', a National Key Research and Development Project.

• Apr. 2022. We are granted a patent on optical computing!

• Feb. 2021. Good news came from Baidu, my project funded by the Ministry of Education and Baidu had been graded 'Excellent'.

• Dec. 2020. I was invited to the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University and gave a talk on AI in Medical Research.

• Dec. 2020. Collaborated with the Sichuan FinTech Society, we successfully organized the 2020 FinTech Summit in Tianfu New Area, Chengdu. I invited my friend Prof. Mogens Høgh Jensen from Niels Bohr Institute, former president of Denmark Science Academy, to speak at this summit. Mogens gave a nice talk about complexity of nature and social systems.

• Nov. 2020. My research on Photonics AI Chip has been granted a funding of one million RMB from Key Technology Innovation and Application Development Program of Chongqing. This is a joint research project with Chongqing friends.

• Nov. 2020. It's great to know that we won the bid for the Key Project 'the Key Technologies for Intelligent 2022 Winter Olympics Games', a National Key Research and Development Project from the Ministry of Sci. and Tech. of China. I will lead my AI team and collaborate with some best hospitals in China to apply AI for 2020 Winter Olympics Games! 

• Nov. 2020. Our proposal to develop an Optical Chip for Matrix Calculation has been awarded a Key Program Project (62035001) worth 2.96 millions RMB from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. I will collaborate with researchers from Peking University and Zhejiang University.

• Nov. 2020. I was invited to give courses AI and Big Data in Pipeline Management (4 times, 1.4 hours per time) for the Gas Pipeline Management Department, China National Petroleum Corporation.

• Oct. 2020. I am an invited speaker for the Great Wall International Congress of Cardiology 2020 - Asian Heart Society Congress 2020. My talk is AI Research and Applications in Cardiology.

• Oct. 2020. I am elected as a trustee of the Equipment Quality Committee for the Chinese Society of Technology Economics. 

• Jun. 2020. I am appointed as the Chief Scientist for the AI Lab by the Futong Tech., a leading public listed IT company in China.

• Feb. 25, 2020. Our research of developing AI to assist diagnosis of periampullary cancer in MRI Images is awarded a research funding of The Key Research and Development Project of Science & Technology Department of Sichuan Province (20ZDYF1129), $28,507/¥200,000. My collaborator is Dr. Song Su of Southwest Medical University.

• Dec. 26, 2019. Wow! Our MOOC course Algorithms and Data Structure in Python is online and has quickly became a popular course and attracted 4,646 students from all around China! I believe this count will keep growing. I developed this course with other three professors. I focus on the part of machine learning and deep learning in python.

• Nov. 26, 2019. It's a great pleasure to announce that the joint research project of AI Technologies in Myopia Prevention, Control, and Clinical Treatment for Children and Youths is formally launched today in Aier Eye Group, the world's largest eye care hospital group. This research is one of 2019 Huan Province Key Research and Development Programs ($700,000/¥5,000,000). My AI team will collaborate with eye experts in Aier to deliver the cutting-edge AI technologies applied in myopia treatments.

• Jul. 1-8, 2019. Visited Purdue University, University of South Carolina, and Appalachian State University.

• Jun. 23-28, 2019. I participated the Dagstuhl Seminar 19261, Distributed Computing with Permissioned Blockchains and Databases, in Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH (English: Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz Center for Informatics), Germany. This seminar had a group of passionate blockchain researchers from all over the world. We thank C. Mohan (IBM Almaden Center – San Jose, US), Beng Chin Ooi (National University of Singapore, SG), and Gottfried Vossen (Universität Münster, DE) for organizing this event. We enjoyed this seminar.

• Jun. 22, 2019. My paper on the blockchain ethics is a nominee of the Magid Igbaria Outstanding Conference Paper Award for ACM SIGMIS CPR'19 in Nashville TN.

• Apr. 19, 2019. We kicked off the series lectures of Innovation Methodology Program for the cloud computing company, Shensirui Information Technology at Chengdu. I gave a talk on recent AI research. Prof. Chen gave a talk on innovation.

• Jan. 30, 2019. Today I visited the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University and discussed our recent medical AI research with doctors from several departments. I am glad that our AI algorithms can help doctors and patients.

• Jan. 23, 2019. The UESTC innovation methodology project team, Prof. Guangyu Chen and I, visited Source Photonics in the Chengdu High-Tech Zone Comprehensive Bonded Zone and discussed the collaboration.

• Jan. 22, 2019. I joined the meeting in Beijing to discuss our cutting edge research of photonics computing.

• Jan. 18, 2019. It's thrilled to be awarded the title of Outstanding Educator 2018 from the School of Computer Science and Engineering for my work! It's a great honor and encouragement.

• Jan. 6, 2019. Today, we received the good news about the funding for our research proposal on Clinical research of Deep Learning Assisted Nerve Detection in Ultrasound Guiding Anesthesia from Luzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau under grant No. 2018-JYJ-45. The financial support is $14,963.56/¥100,000. This research project is a collaboration of Dr. Song Su (Southwest Medical University) and me.

• Dec. 13, 2018. It's great to meet many scholars during the International Conference on Information Systems 2018 (ICIS2018),  San Francisco, California, USA. 

• November 29, 2018. After extremely hard working, we have successfully organized the 2018 International Blockchain Conference in Changsha, China. This conference is a joint effort of The municipal government of Changsha, The Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), and universities like University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Hunan University. In this conference, we hosted over one thousand of participants from China and overseas, and from blockchain industry and academia. Collaborated with Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone, Big Data Research Institute, and Hunan University. We organized the Blockchain Applications and Security Forum. I invited my old friend Dr. Mohan (member of NEA, IBM Fellow, IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow) and many other leading experts to this conference and forum.

• November 18, 2018. It's my great honor and pleasure to be invited as a keynote speaker in the International Symposium on Optometry and Vision Science, Changsha, China. This event is hosted by AIER eye hospital group, which is the largest group of chain eye hospitals in China and the world. I presented my AI research titled "Decision-making for Ortho-K Lens Parameters and Prediction of Flattening Effect Based on AI Algorithm" to an audience of 700 doctors. This is a joint research project collaborated with the research team at Aier Institute of Optometry & Vision Science. In this research, I led my team at UESTC developed deep learning and machine learning algorithms. Our initial results are exceptional good. We hope this ongoing research will greatly help doctors and patients.

• November 9, 2018. Our interdisciplinary team was invited to the headquarter of HW, the global leader of communication, in Shenzhen. We gave a talk on Optical Neural Network and discussed with the colleagues from Huawei. Using silicon optical integrated chips to realize deep learning algorithms is very promising and challenging in science and engineering. Our team is a joint force of experts from backgrounds of Integrated Circuit, Quantum information, Photonics, and Computer Science. We will keep exploring in this frontier.

• November 1 – 3, 2018. Good news comes from Norfolk, VA at the Conference on Information Systems Applied Research (CONISAR) and Education Special Interest Group Conference (EDSIGCON) that our paper is awarded the Distinguished Paper Award. Approximately 150 attendees from 70 colleges and universities presented over 100 peer-reviewed papers, cases, and abstracts at EDSIGCON and CONISAR. Our paper titled, “Improve the Loyalty of Mobile Payment Users in China by Increasing the Fit between Skill, Technology and Task,” is a joint work of Dr. Charlie Chen, Dr. Hoon Choi, Dr. Jason Xiong from Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University and me from UESTC. 

• October 30, 2018. I am pleased to get the good news that my project is funded by Baidu, the leading Internet company in China, in the 2018 education program from Ministry of Education of P.R. China. In this project, I and my collaborators will develop an Interdisciplinary AI course for different majors such as engineering, CS, business, management, medicine, physics, chemistry, and social sciences.

• August 20, 2018. We are extremely delighted to know that our research proposal titled The Mechanism of Break-through Innovation Value Co-creation: Cross-boundary, Evolution, and Business Logic Transformation has be granted by National Natural Science Foundation of China under No. 71872027. We are awarded 490,000RMB or $71,646 between 2019.01-2022.12. Congratulations to the PI of this research, Prof. Yunfei Shao (School of Economics and Management, UESTC), and our excellent team! I will contribute to this research by investigating technologies of Big data, AI, and Blockchain.

• August 17, 2018. We opened the Innovation Training in Source Photonics! We have over 150 R&D experts to participate this course. Thanks to the HR director, Prof. Chen and PhD students from School of Economics and Management, UESTC, Director Chen and colleagues from Sichuan Province Science and Technology Institute. 

• July 26, 2018. Visited Source Photonics with Prof. Chen, Prof. Shao, two PhD students from School of Economics and Management, UESTC. SP is the leading global manufacturer of optical transceivers. I gave a presentation about Sichuan Province Technology Innovation Program to colleagues from HR and R&D departments of SP. We agreed to launch a tailored technology innovation training program on innovation methodologies to SP's R&D team in the near future.

• July 19, 2018. It's great pleasure to be noticed by the selection committee that our proposal on blockchain research has been awarded a funding from ACM SIGMIS. We appreciate this opportunity and honor.

• July 7, 2018. Participated The International Conference of Exploring New Information Economics: The Challenges and Opportunities (ENIE2018), Huaiyin Institute of Technology, Huai’an, China. Topics of blockchain, solutions for finance, complex networks, machine learning, and big data are discussed. It's great to get together with some great friends.

• June 23-24, 2018. Participated The 12th China Summer Workshop on Information Management (CSWIM 2018) hosted by Qingdao University in Qingdao, China. The theme of CSWIM 2018 is “Information Management Research in the Big Data and AI Era”. More than 480+ IS scholars from all around the world joined this event. I met and got to know several scholars and enjoyed the sessions.

• June 11, 2018. Invited by Prof. Nianwen Xue of Computer Science Department at Brandeis University, Boston, I visited the Language and Linguistics Program group and gave a talk titled 10 Years of Sichuan Innovation Initiative. In this talk I introduced how we served the industrial partners and helped them in R&D and innovation management in the past 10 years since 2007. After that, I introduced my recent AI for Healthcare research projects.

• June 6, 2018. Invited by Professor Michael Pecht, the founder of Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Prof. Guangyu Chen, School of Economics and Management, UESTC, and I visited CALCE. We were hosted by Dr. Das and the researches of CACLE. I gave a brief talk on our AI research projects and introduced UESTC. Dr. Das briefed research activities in CACLE. We met with battery group and PHM group for discussions. Dr. Das also toured us around the campus and labs in CACLE. We appreciate Dr. Das for his hospitality and we agree to keep in touch for future collaborations in research and students/faculty exchanges and visits between UESTC and CACLE.

• June 4, 2018. Visited by Prof. Jun Deng at School of Medicine, Yale University, New Haven, CT. I presented our ongoing AI for healthcare research projects. We decided to seek future collaborations in AI for healthcare.

• May 25-26, 2018. Participated Baidu AI - Deep Learning Developer Camp in High Tech Zone, Chengdu. Had a good discussion with friends from Baidu AI team and education group. I am developing an AI general core course for all majors in UESTC. Baidu AI team will help me to integrate cutting edge AI technologies, examples, and applications into this AI course. ps, Can you believe that one developer is working on a deep learning algorithm for giant panda face recognition?

• May 24, 2018. Visited West China Hospital of Sichuan University, the largest hospital in the world and China, the second best hospital in China, for a meeting with doctors on a joint research initiative of applying AI in Cardiology. In this new research, we are considering to design deep learning AI algorithms in hope to automatically identify the coronary arteries and quantitatively measure the seriousness of stenosis, and process the VH-IVUS ultrasound images of coronary arteries. 

• May 19, 2018. Gave a half day invited lecture on Industrial Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing to a group of R&D personals, including CTO at Laoken Medical Technology co., ltd. This company is established in 1998 and now is a leading sterilizer and air purifier manufacturer in the world. This lecture is arranged by the Innovation Method Program of Sichuan province. The CTO invited me to join them to R&D a robot in hospital.

• May 17, 2018. Gave a talk on Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence Integrated Chips, and New Advances in Healthcare, at AIER Institute of Optometry & Visual Science, AIER Eye Hospital Group, world's largest private eye hospital group, Changsha, China. We also discussed a joint research project using AI to predict OKLens parameters.

• May 11, 2018. Invited Dr. Mohan (member of NEA, fellow of IEEE, ACM, and IBM) to China-US Exchange Forum of Frontier Technology: Blockchain, Hangzhou, China. This event is hosted by Alibaba Business School, Hangzhou Normal University and Zhejiang Blockchain Technology Application Association. We also visited Alibaba Business School and the AI lab of Alibaba Group.

• April 25-27, 2018. Participated three-days Advanced Disciplines Lectures on Quantum Computation organized by The China Computer Federation (CCF), Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Quantum computation, quantum circuits, quantum algorithms, and quantum cryptography are discussed.

• April 21, 2018. Gave an invited talk on Artificial Intelligence Applications in Ophthalmology to an audience of ophthalmologists from across the country in 2018 Spring Chinese Ophthalmologists Rising Stars Training Camp at Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences & Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, Chengdu, China.

• April 16, 2018. Gave an invited talk on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Health Care to an audience of 30 doctors at The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University, Guangxi, China. Now I am working with a doctor from that university to study an AI to process pathological images.

• March 27, 2018. My invited article titled 'Chengdu City Blockchain Industry Development Strategy Study Report' is published by Chengdu Municipal Technology Advisory Committee in new issue of Chengdu Technology Decision Internal Reference Reports. This article analyzes the strategies for Chengdu to develop blockchain industry, discussed advantages, disadvantages, possible policies, talents, education, promotion. This article is for policy decision makings of top officials of Chengdu.

• March 30, 2018. Gave a half day invited lecture on Artificial Intelligence Technology and Applications, Innovation Lecture to Researchers and Developers, 180 audiences from over 30 enterprises, Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Department & Yibin Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, Yibin, China.
