Marketing Intern
June 2016 - May 2017
I had the privilege to join Teraco Data Environments in 2016 as a marketing intern, where I assisted at reception and with boardroom setup. At that time, we had only around 40 employees and had just started building our JB West extension of the original Johannesburg office. NAPAfrica had around 50 networks connected and was peaking at 50 Gbps of traffic. I officially joined the Business Development team in 2017, focusing on account management, administrative duties, and hands-on assistance with racking, stacking, and patching for the NAPAfrica team. I had a lot to learn as I joined the company straight out of high school with no technical knowledge or experience.
In 2018, we launched the Africa Cloud Exchange Platform, and I was tasked with introducing the new platform to our clients and onboarding them. In 2020, we kicked off the project, which I have been entrusted to lead, to develop and design the Africa Cloud Exchange portal. This portal integrates with our network devices via API, allowing clients to log on to the platform and auto-provision virtual circuits. Over the years, my role evolved into a more strategic position where I am responsible for overseeing and assisting with the operation and growth of both NAPAfrica and Africa Cloud Exchange.
As my time with the NAPAfrica team came to an end in 2024, NAPAfrica was recognized as the 6th largest Internet Exchange Point globally and the largest in Africa, with over 640 networks connected and reaching 4.4 Tbps of traffic. The Africa Cloud Exchange has also gained recognition as the official cloud on-ramping platform in South Africa. This success is, of course, thanks to the hard work, dedication, and support from my department and the wider Teraco team.
