Jitendra Sangwai is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (Institute of Eminence). He published about 160 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals and has several patents to his credit. He has been recognized as one of the Top 3% of Highly Cited Authors from India by the American Chemical Society. He received the National Award for Technology Innovation and National Geoscience Award from the Gov. of India for excellence in research and development. He is currently serving as an associate editor in the Energy & Fuels journal published by the American Chemical Society. Prof. Sangwai is also a fellow of the Indian Academy of Engineering.
Leadership and mentoring skills
1. Mentored four M. Tech, three B. Tech, and 10 internship students during Ph.D. tenure, guiding them through experimental design, data analysis, and thesis/project development; demonstrated leadership in fostering research skills, scientific communication, and professional growth across diverse academic levels. The joint research initiative with these students yielded three high-impact publications, one granted patent, and an additional patent application.
2. Guided cross-functional teams of engineers about pilot plant demonstrations through real-time data analysis and decision-making to optimize key parameters (e.g., yield, energy use); developed standardized protocols and troubleshooting guides adopted company-wide, reducing wastes; and tailored training modules to bridge gaps between theoretical research and industrial implementation of CO2 capture technologies.
3. Participated in the G-20 summit as liaison officer for German delegates in an educational working group meeting on Digital Technologies in Education organized at Chennai under the umbrella of G-20, 2023, meetings in India.
4. Awarded a €1,978 research grant under the Saxon Student Mobility Program to attend a sustainability workshop at T.U. Dresden, Germany, to advance expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and exchange sustainable practices with global peers. This allowed him to collaborate with international peers, contributing to discussions on enhancing the long-term sustainability of industrial and environmental processes. Engaging with a diverse global research community deepened his understanding of LCA methodologies and their role in driving sustainable solutions worldwide.
5. Received prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (top <1% of researchers get this fellowship) for doctoral studies on the challenging topic of developing Indigenous technology for efficient and sustainable carbon capture and sequestration to decarbonize carbon-intensive industrial clusters. During this fellowship, He also teaches underprivileged school students as a mentoring assignment under the program of education for all.
6. Led and coordinated volunteer responsibilities at the National Symposium on Catalyst and Reaction Engineering Symposium (CARES-2024), ensuring smooth logistics, team communication, and attendee support; demonstrated proactive problem-solving and leadership in a high-pressure environment.
7. Took initiative to lead live lab demonstrations during an institutional open house-2024 for the chemical engineering department, engaging with diverse groups of high school students and guiding them through lab facilities and experiments.
