These books, specifically, I have made notes in them and left little letters and keepsakes. They are my most special books. I keep things in them that mean a lot to me; poems and quotes and pictures of my loved ones, and I love opening a book at random and then just finding a little piece of my heart in that book.

The third part of the book is called Cookbook for a Sacred Life. Everything from how to take care of your body, how to meditate, yoga poses to practice, what to eat, what to put into your system, mantras, and just an actual cookbook for a sacred life!

He talks a lot about heightened sensitivity, meaning that the yoga practice will eventually spill over from the realms of our mats into our day-to-day life. It might change our diet, it might change our health, meaning how we take care of ourselves, the things we choose to put into our bodies. It might change our relationships. We become more sensitive to all of life and we become more aware.

Gary Kraftsow, the founder of Viniyoga, may be remembered as the author of Yoga for Wellness, a seminal book about applying the tools of yoga in a therapeutic context. But one might argue that Yoga for Transformation, which makes profound practices and abstruse ideas readily available to readers, is an even greater work.

I was given The Four Agreements from a dear friend about a year and a half ago, I only recently read it from cover to cover... and then re-read it. I don't think that I was ready for all the eye-opening, life changing information that came with it until just now. It was incredible!! I am so pleased that you have also read it too. I have actually only recently discovered Yoga With Adriene and I cannot be happier to have come across you. I have been sharing you and your funny wise ways with all of my friends and family. Showing them the beauty and freedom of yoga. I have been practicing yoga for a few years on and off, but I think that I really need yoga and everything that you can and have been teaching (and re-teaching me) in my life again. I am on a "change of perspective" journey, and I am thankful for your videos and blog. ? Thank you very much for just being you!!

Bless you Amanda. I am on a similar journey right now too believe it or not. I am re-reading The Four Agreements. I love the simplicity in the teachings. It reminds me of yoga practice. It really is as simple as a conscious breath. Hope you can join our book club next month and invite your friends and family! Love to you! Keep spreading the love and shining.

Yeah! glad to be joining the book club! will be ordering The tree of yoga soon! Thanks so much for your teaching, it is truely inspiring and motivating, I have started yoga on and off for a few year and finally feel ready to dive in deeper and have a consistent practice! I am so glad to have found YWA!

Hi, I was wondering if you could recommend any good books on starting meditation. Since starting yoga I've kinda ignored that aspect. I see that The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali miht have some about it but I am pretty new to yoga so that might be over my head. Thanks!

I purchased two of these books, Light on Yoga and The Heart of Yoga. The reviews said they were good for beginners, and I have to disagree--sort of. While they are comprehensive and excellent, I don't think they're really *approachable* for beginners. (I still recommend them to anyone reading this, though!) I just ordered How to Use Yoga by Mira Mehta, which looks more friendly for new yogis and yoginis.

I'm not sure this is the place to do it, but I really just want to say thank you. I have been doing your online yoga classes for the past year and they are always helpful, fun, relaxing, and soul-engaging. I have had some special yoga teachers in my life and I feel like you are one of them (I hope you don't mind me saying that), even though I have never taken a class in person. I live in the Yukon --we have a nice yoga community, but it is small, so it is wonderful to know that no matter what day it is, or what time, I can always find one of your classes online. Thank you so much for the wonderful work you do.

Hi Adrienne!, I stumbled across this blog and I am so glad that I did! I have been looking to enhance my yoga practice with more practical knowledge! I just have a question about the book Um, anything by Louise Hay. I can't seem to find it.

Hi Adriene,

I'm on day 11 of your 30 day yoga challenge! I can't tell you how much better I feel overall. I look forward to getting up in the morning, getting some coffee, lighting some candles and putting you channel on for an adventure in yoga. Your yoga has inspired me to get in overall shape as well. I have started eating clean and exercising throughout the day as well. I love your videos - thank you!!! Thank you for the book list I will be sure to check these out.

Hi Adriene, Thanks so much for this list. You must get a lot of traffic on this page! I'm wondering if you would consider changing your links here so that they go to bookshop.org rather than Amazon to support local bookshops?

Thanks! Lucy

People enrolled in accredited yoga teacher training programs may be required to read certain books prior to or during their certification process. However, you cannot become a certified yoga instructor just by reading books. Training programs require a certain number of in-person instruction hours for certification.

Scientific inquiry has examined numerous aspects of yoga. The combination of stretching your muscles and matching your breath to movement has proven merits for health. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, yoga may help people lose weight, relieve stress, manage depression and anxiety, relieve pain, and quit smoking, among other benefits.

Restorative Yoga Therapy: The Yapana Way to Self-Care and Well-Being by Leeann Carey. This is a great book with lots of ideas for how to use props to support your gentle yoga routine.

The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga by Bernie Clark. If you're new to Yin yoga, start here. Bernie gives incredible, in-depth information about each pose, including the anatomy, how to enter and exit the pose safely, its benefits and contraindications, joints affected, and recommended hold times. As a yoga teacher, this book is an absolute must as it offers some of the best full-body yin sequences for each meridian line.

Relax and Renew by Judith Lasater. This book is wonderful. I like how the first half gives you an introduction to why restorative yoga is useful, and how to get started and add in props. The second half of the book has specific yoga sequences to aid common problems: back pain, headaches, insomnia, difficulties with breathing, jet lag, and cycles for women (menstruation, pregnancy and menopause).

Restoring Flexibility by Andrea Gilats. While this book is geared toward an older crowd, I really think it's an awesome resource for any age group because it provides a lot of great info about basic yoga moves to increase mobility, flexibility and longevity. I love the practice sequences, too! There are workouts for upper body, lower body, spinal flexibility, hip flexibility (flexors, rotators and adductors!), sun salutations, and muscle relaxation. At the end, there's also a four week program to try.

You can't go wrong trying any of these books to start your gentle yoga practice. If you prefer practicing at a studio, look for classes that say yin, gentle, restorative, or slow flow in the title of the class, and don't be afraid to ask the teacher questions (especially if something hurts) and USE props!

Two main texts that I have felt called to are The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and The Bhagavad Gita. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a text that outlines a way for us as human beings to live this life in as little pain and suffering as possible. The Bhagavad Gita is a text that teaches us how to fulfill our duties and responsibilities while simultaneously having a spiritual life. Both texts are pretty common to come across during a yoga teacher training or during your search for deeper yoga studies. Both texts also have a lot of different translations, variations, and commentaries from various authors and it can be really overwhelming to sort out which one to dive into! 0852c4b9a8
