A reception with beer, wine, soft drinks, and snacks will be held at 5 pm, after Lightning Talk Session A, in the foyer outside of the lecture hall.
There will be a remote panel "Intersectionality in operator algebras" organized by the Operator Algebras Mentor Network (OAMN) at 5 pm after Lightning Talk Session B, with the discussion aired in person in the auditorium. This is open to everyone interested, not exclusively the OAMN mentee target group! This features panelists from minority or underrepresented groups, focusing on their experiences as underrepresented mathematicians. The panelists are:
Rufus Willett (Hawaii),
Bhishan Jacelon (Prague),
Arundhathi Krishnan (Thurles),
Comfort Mintah (Waterloo),
Therese Landra (Santa Barbara).
Kristin Courtney Gabe (Odense) will moderate the discussion. Participants are invited to submit questions via this link. If there's something you're curious about, whether it's related to identity, mentorship, systemic challenges, or pathways to success, you are encouraged to submit your input. Please submit your questions by Monday, July 21.
After lunch, there will be a free afternoon to collaborate, relax, or join one of our excursions:
A trip to Copenhagen by train
Bouldering
A trip to the beach at Kerteminde by (public) bus
A trip to Egeskov Slot by private bus
The H.C. Andersen Hus in town, a museum about the writer H. C. Andersen from Odense.
You can sign up for the excursions at registration and during the week. Please note that you will have to cover expenses (except the Egeskov bus) yourself. We also recommend the Danish Railway Museum in the city centre for train enthusiasts, and the art museum Kunst Museum Brandts.
Excursion to Copenhagen (led by David Jekel and Ian Thompson)
We will take the 14:10 train from Odense Station to København H. If you book tickets early enough in advance (for instance, now) you can get a non-refundable ticket for 99DKK (13€) but otherwise it will be around 300DKK (40€). We will walk 1.4km to Ved Stranden 26 to take the Copenhagen Canal Tour which costs 199DKK (26€). It departs every half hour and lasts one hour, so we will likely leave at 16:30. After the canal tour, we will freely explore the town and eat dinner. David plans to take the 20:35 train back to Odense, while Ian will remain in Copenhagen. You are free to book a different return train if you like.
Trip to Kerteminde (with Ali Miller)
We’ll get the bus to Kerteminde from the bus stop at Odense Station, probably setting off around 14:00. Kerteminde is a cute little coastal town, quintessentially Danish, with a nice beach, so if weather permits we’ll go to the beach. The sea is shallow and calm so if you fancy a swim bring a towel (and a swimming costume)! If the weather is slightly less nice we might walk a bit along the coast and wander round town. The buses (100A) are pretty frequent but payment requires either cash or an app (Rejsekort or Rejsebillet, be warned the latter may not work without a Danish phone number).
Visit H.C. Andersen Hus (with Lukas Obermeyer)
Hans Christian Andersen is a celebrated author of short stories and fairytales from the 19th century and probably the most famous child of the city of Odense. There is a lovely museum dedicated to his life and work, located near the town center (Sankt Jørgens Haven 1). I have been there already, it is great.
The plan is the following: After lunch, we will take the tram around 2 pm towards the museum (or you can choose to meet us there at 2:30 pm). Visiting the museum will take approximately 2 to 3 hours. You have to buy tickets individually and in advance to be on the safe side (unfortunately, there is no option of reserving tickets without paying already).
You can book tickets online via https://hcandersenshus.dk/en/.
During the lunch break, the Operator Algebras Mentor Network (OAMN) will host a lunch exclusively for participants who belong to the OAMN mentee target group. This includes but is not limited to cis gender women, transgender, and non-binary people. Please see this glossary of terms for further clarification. If you belong to the target group and would like to attend the lunch, please sign up via this form by Wednesday, July 16.
At 4 pm - 5:30 pm, we have a career panel for discussing challenges that young researchers face and answering some of your questions about a career in and outside of academia. Our panelists are:
Kristin Courtney Gabe, Assistant Professor at SDU working in Operator Algebras,
Tim de Laat, Professor at CAU Kiel working in Operator Algebras,
Toke Meier Carlsen, Software Developer who was a professor in Operator Algebras for many years,
Jacob von Bornemann Hjelmborg, Professor in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography at SDU with a PhD in Operator Algebras,
Matias Lolk, Software Developer with a PhD in Operator Algebras.
You can already submit questions (anonymously if you want) for the career panel on the following Padlet board. Here, you can also comment on other questions or rate them to show us which ones you find most interesting. We encourage you to submit questions in advance already so that we can have a selection of questions that cover the topics you ask about most frequently.
At 7 pm, we will have the conference dinner at Storms Pakhus, Lerchesgade 4, where you can choose food and drinks from a wide variety of street food places. We will provide vouchers to cover your food and the first drink. Storms Pakhus is a 5-10 minute walk from the train station and the hostel.
