What is NHS?
NHS stands for National Honor Society. We are a student-run club and a branch of the national organization that seeks to serve our communities, give scholarships, and allow the most advanced of our students to cooperate and work with one another. We hold our members to four ideals: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Each year, we host and hold countless fundraisers, events, and community service opportunities in order to enable the students at YLHS to fulfill their potential as upstanding members of society.
Why should I join NHS?
To be a member of NHS is a prestigious honor. NHS students are ones who have gone above and beyond, who have demonstrated their competence at academics, service, and leadership. It's an essential element of one's college application, and it's a great way to meet new people, make memories with one's friends, and gain opportunities to serve the community.
Is NHS open to freshmen?
At YLHS, NHS is open only to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Sophomores and juniors can apply for NHS during second semester; freshmen cannot. Seniors must have already been admitted into NHS during their sophomore or junior years.
How can I join NHS?
We do a member drive during January and February, during which we expect potential members to fill out applications and submit them to us. We will evaluate each application--we have a GPA and community service requirement--and then admit people into our club based on those. During the 2015-2016 member drive, we admitted eighty new members--a record high for our club. Members do NOT have to reapply after they have been admitted into the club.
How can I join the NHS board?
In order to join the NHS board, one must be an active and upstanding member of NHS. Potential NHS Board members must fill out applications and undergo an extensive interview process. They may be either sophomores and juniors (who, during the next year, would serve as juniors and seniors). This interview process typically occurs in March/April.
CAN I USE REGULAR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS FOR NHS HOURS?
Yes, but you must fill out and turn in the NHS community service form and the facility approval request form. Please see below for forms. Each member MUST complete 2 tutoring hours every semester.Â
