Kyra's bio
Sustainability Consultancy Director, Sustain Our Future
Kyra Woods is a proud Chicagoan and honored to wear titles like daughter, sister, Soror, friend, collaborator, and change-maker. Kyra is an alumna of Northwestern University, where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in environmental engineering in 2013; the U.S. Peace Corps, through which she served as a public health volunteer in Guinea with the UN’s World Food Programme; and Chicago United for Equity’s 2020 cohort.
Kyra has nurtured her childhood interests in biology, environmental health, and public health into a career spanning various sectors. After returning to Chicago from her role with the Peace Corps , Kyra worked with the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club as the lead for Chicago’s Ready for 100 campaign. She went on to work at the City of Chicago in the Office of Mayor Lori Lightfoot as a Policy Advisor. Beginning this year, Kyra is the Sustainability Consultancy Director for Sustain Our Future Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to developing strategies for meaningful community benefit through the rapidly growing green economy. Each role has allowed Kyra to exercise her commitment to creating more resilient, safe, and healthy communities.
In her free time, Kyra loves riding her bike and casual hikes. Whether with friends or solo, she enjoys exploring roads and trails in Chicago and new cities. She also enjoys maintaining her Duolingo streak, caring for her growing collection of house plants, and traveling with family and friends.
Dr. Daniel Horton is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Northwestern University, where he leads the Climate Change Research Group. A primary focus of his research examines the relationship between environmental factors such as extreme heat and poor air quality and their exposure, health, and environmental justice implications.
Dan spent his youth running through the woods of upstate New York, tending to his mother’s Toggenburg goats, and patiently learning to fish from my father and older brothers. He received a B.S. in Physics from Tulane University, a B.S. in Atmospheric
Sciences from Texas A&M University, a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Michigan and performed postdoctoral research in Stanford’s Department of Earth System Science. In addition, Dan served in AmeriCorps as an environmental educator and trail boss, and five years in the U.S. Air Force as an operational weather officer.
