Summer 2025 - R&D Engineering Intern on Alina™ - Medical Device Development at YaYa Scientific
As an R&D Engineering Intern at YaYa Scientific, I support the research and development of innovative surgical technologies aimed at improving patient outcomes. My work spans multiple facets of the product development process, including:
Medical Device Design: Contributing to the iterative design and prototyping of novel medical devices, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and ergonomic performance in clinical environments.
CAD Modeling & Engineering Drawings: Creating and refining 3D models and detailed engineering drawings in SolidWorks to support component fabrication and system integration.
Additive Manufacturing: Utilizing 3D printing technologies for rapid prototyping and testing, optimizing print parameters, and validating fit, form, and function.
Regulatory Compliance: Assisting with documentation in accordance with FDA Class II medical device regulations, including design history files (DHF), risk analysis, and design control traceability.
Testing & Evaluation: Supporting bench testing, fixture design, and data collection to validate performance criteria and guide design decisions.
This internship has deepened my understanding of the medical device development lifecycle, from early-stage innovation through design for manufacturability and regulatory alignment, while strengthening my skills in engineering communication, problem-solving, and collaboration within a startup environment.
Spring 2024 - Fall 2025 - "Medtronic-Sponsored CU Senior Design Project - Test Fixture"
As Project Manager and Design Engineer, I worked as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and standardize testing fixtures and procedures for the evaluation of surgical instruments. I led the design and fabrication of a tissue fixture capable of maintaining consistent tension across tissues of varying sizes and thicknesses within five distinct cutting zones, ensuring repeatable and reliable test conditions. I also engineered and built a device fixture to securely hold surgical instruments of different lengths and diameters during testing. In addition to my technical responsibilities, I coordinated project timelines and team efforts, contributing to the early completion of approximately 30% of project tasks ahead of schedule.
Spring 2024 - "Tremor Tracker"
My team developed the Tremor Tracker, an innovative wearable device designed for continuous detection and monitoring of tremors in individuals with neurological conditions. The device leverages accelerometers and specialized algorithms to capture real-time data on tremor patterns and severity, supporting more informed clinical assessment and treatment decisions. Designed to be non-invasive, unobtrusive, and suitable for daily use, the Tremor Tracker prioritizes both patient comfort and reliable data collection. I also led the roadmap for future enhancements, including motion artifact filtering, EMG-based validation, the development of a custom data analysis application, and the design of a unique vibration board aimed at reducing tremor symptoms in real time.
Fall 2023 - "Freeze Dance Robot"
The Freeze Dance Robot performs five dance moves: 90 degrees CW with forward movement for 1.25 seconds, 90 degrees CCW with backward movement for 1.25 seconds, and a 180-degree CCW rotation. LEDs alternate between states during each move, creating a freeze when the music stops and resuming the latest move when the music restarts.
Spring 2023 - "GILE: Green Interactive Learning Experience"
Recyclable and compostable items often end up in landfills due to confusion about disposal options. The Green Interactive Learning Experience (GILE) is a smart trash can lid with a QR code scanner. It identifies items and rotates the lid to the right disposal spot.
Fall 2021 - "The Better Brita"
For this project, we were tasked to redesign an existing product we use daily. As a team, we re-engineered our everyday Brita to boost water filtration, increase capacity, and strengthen spout and filling compartment closures. The redesigned pitcher features a convenient Filling Lid, a protective Spout Lid, and an expanded Interior Filling Cavity for enhanced filter capacity.
