Wizer me is an online website that allows teachers to create new worksheets and use the already available ones. Wizer enables educators to incorporate various multimedia elements (such as videos, audio clips, and images) directly into their interactive worksheets. Videos have the ability to engage learners, fostering the acquisition of new skills and inspiring creativity for various tasks. Also, by being able to use already made worksheets, this app is time saving and inspiring, as teachers can learn from their colleagues' works.
How to use it
1) First of all, it is necessary to create an account. As soon as you log in, you're directed to the page below where you can choose whether to create your own worksheet or to use the ones made by other professionals.
2) If you want to use an already made worksheet, you have to just click on the search engine and search according to topic or subject. Then, you just select the worksheet of your choice. You will be given the option to download the worksheet or to just assign it to your students (you can click on "google classroom" so that the worksheet is automatically posted). You can also leave a comment at the bottom of the page thanking the owner of the worksheet.
3) You can also decide to create your own worksheet. In this case, on the left side of the page you will be able to slect the desgin/templates you want to use in your work. At the bottom, you have the possibility of adding activities. These activities range from adding open ended questions to importing whole worksheets from google drive, your computer or canva (see picture below). This website even allows you to set up how to assess our students: they can get the correct answers when they hand in their assignment, you can add audio feedback, automatically download worksheets upon submission, among others (additional features are given to those with a premium account). It is also important to mention that you can upload your worksheet to google drive, assign it to students on google classrooms or just download it by clicking on "saved"
How can this website help SEN students?
Wizer Me is a great site to use with SEN students. This is so as it allows teachers to insert texts, video, audios, among other features. This certainly helps with diversity in the classroom and multiple intelligences, but this website will be useful because instead of just playing a video in class, students can have the video at hand and play it as many times as they deem necessary (Hockley, 2017). Also, learners can be given the choice of watching a video or reading a text. So embedding videos will probably be useful for students with dyslexia or visually impaired, but having a text will be more resourceful for learners with hearing impairments (Delaney, 2016).
Possible task
Learners can go to the school lab and work on a worksheet in pairs. In this worksheet, they will be asked to read the following text on States of Matter and then, they will complete on the worksheet a true or false exercise to check comprehension (see below). Students will be alloted some time to do the whole activity, but they can choose as to how much time dedicate to reading the text and completing the exercise.
Read the sentences and write T (true) or F (false)
Plasma and gas are electrically neutral.
Atoms can be tightly bonded together or dispersed at a distance from each other.
Water is a very usual type of matter: it shrinks when it forms a crystalline structure
A solid has a definite shape and volume because the molecules are dispersed
Molten lava illustrates a solid changing to liquid because of intense heat.
Superfluid is a recently-discovered state of matter
Evernote is a versatile digital note-taking tool used for creating and organizing notes. It can be installed on a mobile device or tablet or access it through a web browser. This website allows learners to create and share notes with their peers and to create a "to-do list". Students can use tags to assign labels to connect their notes and shortcuts.
How to use it
1) You can log in by using your google account. First, you need to click on "new". You will be given several options: you can create a note (which is what students will be expected to do), you can create a task, upload a file from your computer or just draw whatever you need to be reminded of
2) Once students click on note, they will be able to write their own notes and give them a title. In these notes students can hyperlink texts, highlight important information, select the note as "to do" or "task" and there is even an option which allows students to have AI go over their notes and make them neater and tidier. Once students are ready, they can just close the app (the work is automatically saved) or they can click on "share" to share their work with their peers.
Is this website beneficial for SEN students?
Yes, it is. Evernote is especially useful for those students with motor skills challenges since it helps learners take down notes in a tidier way by just typing in a computer, instead of using pen and writing down in a sheet of paper (Delaney, 2016).
Possible task
Learners can use this app to take down notes in class. This app can also be used for example in a roleplay. Students can roleplay the situation of a trial (we can make them suppose that safety measures were not followed in the school's lab and an accident happened). The students that are the jury members must take down notes on evernote of every detail the defendant and the plaintiff mention so as to make a good decision by the end of the trial. These notes can later be shared with the whole class for the sake of transparency and as ground for their decisions.
Lucidchart is a web-based application where learners can work together in real-time, allowing simultaneous contributions that are instantly visible to all participants. It offers a range of features, including mind maps, diagrams, and flow charts, which can be advantageous for these students. It also fosters teamwork as students need to exchange ideas to create the appropriate diagram.
Tutorial
1) You can sign up for free or you can also create a premium account
2) Click the option you prefer to create a mind map, a graphic organizer or a diagram
3) Regardless of your choice, you will be given a menu on the left side of the page where you can select the font, upload images, add sticky notes, insert figures, create a table, among others.
Is this website appropriate for SEN learners?
It is, indeed. This tool can be particularly beneficial for dyslexic students, as it presents information in a more visual manner, aiding in sequencing and organization (Delaney, 2016).
Possible task
Chemistry students at UTN can use this app to create a mind map with the aim of classifying things that can usually be found in laboratory: things you can wear, safety elements, toxic elements, etc. Instead of writing definitions, they can include pictures of each element to make it more visually-friendly. This mind map can later be displayed in the school lab.
