The memorable events of his life... as gathered from his notes.

My father kept some notes about the highlights of his life. These were typed-up and hand-edited over many decades. Fortunately, he did update them from decade to decade; as they were used to compile his biography. Here, I present them as I found them and in chronological order.

Tunku Abdullah consolidated his business ventures into a conglomerate under the name of "Melewar" Group or Corporation. In 1988, a Silver Jubilee Corporate book was commissioned to promote the business. The introductory section contains some details of his early life.

THE MELEWAR CORPORATION 1963 1988
Twenty-five years is a long time. But it only appears so when one is looking ahead, with every year seen as a hurdle to be cleared. In retrospect, the years flow all too quickly like water under a bridge.

PREFACEThis book was prepared in commemoration of 25 years of my participation in business for the ultimate benefit of my family. In celebration of this milestone, The Melewar Group organised various activities in the month of August 1988 to take advantage of the auspiciousness of the figure 8 in the year of the dragon (a Chinese belief that has gained wide acceptance among the business community). It has been a long experience, with happy "ups" and serious "downs" — stumbling, tumbling, groping but always fighting to achieve success in the most competitive business world of Malaysia; against many odds, particularly in the first few years before the New Economic Policy was even thought of, straight out of Government Civil Service without experience, knowledge and guidance in the world of business; literally toil, sweat and tears (not blood) but to come out of it all is the most exhilirating feel-ing. So my advice to my Bumiputra friends is never to give up. At the worst of times, do not feel dejected, instead take it up as a challenge and look into other areas to rehabilitate yourself. Always move with con-fidence, and believe positively that Allah is with those who help themselves. You will succeed through your own efforts and this is most gratifying.4
This book is dedicated to the very many managers and working groups over the 25 years serving with dedication and loyalty, including the very few who did well at first but played me out in the end! I can in fact count the latter group only in the fingers of one hand — but to the many other thousands I feel indeed grateful and thankful for their support and complete trust in me. To my family I hand over what I have achieved —some of course with many problems still to be solved. But then problems must be faced as a chal-lenge — then only can you achieve greater heights. This book is therefore to be read with so many problems and solutions as an invisible background, but it does give the Melewar Story of 25 years.Y.A.M. TUNKU ABDULLAH IBNI ALMARHUM TUANKU ABDUL RAHMAN, DKYR, PPT.5
When Tunku Abdullah chose the name Melewar for what he knew would grow into an established corporation, he was invoking the heritage left to him by his royal forefathers. In 1773, the inhabitants of nine provinces of what is now called Negeri Sembilan, invited a prince from Minangkabau in West Sumatra to rule over them.11
The people who lived there were Minangkabau, a proud and business-minded people from West Sumatra. In time, they saw the need for the unification of the nine provinces and discovered a ruler in Raja Melewar. Thus began the history and glory of Negeri Sembilan and all her sons. In modern times, Raja Melewar's descendants have found expression in the fields of business and industry, bringing to the forefront their shining talent as businessmen and leaders. Tunku Abdullah's royal brother is the present ruler of Negeri Sembilan.12
Below: Tunku Abdullah at the age of sixteen —middle row, second from left. A group photo of the Boy Scouts of the Kuala Kangsar Malay College, 1941. Tunku Abdullah was a student in this school from 1936 —1941. Prior to that, his primary education was in the Kuala Pilah Govt. English School, Negeri Sembilan, now known as Tuanku Mohamed School.13
Even from his youth, Tunku Abdullah was clearly earmarked for a destiny of achievements. From the Malay College, he was sent to Japan for his college education during the Second World War. When the war ended, he went under private tutelage in London, England and then pursued further studies in public administration at Glasgow University, Scotland.14
A group photograph of the Kuala Kangsar Malay College students. The man in the dark robe is the famous Headmaster, HR Carey; the late Tun Razak, seated second from left; His Royal Highness Tuanku Jaafar, Tunku Abdullah's elder brother, seated far right; and Tunku Abdullah standing first row, second from right.15
"In Japan, I learnt discipline, punctuality and resilience. More than that, the military training I went through taught me strength of character and courage. It was an important part of my youth and I still hold very dear some of the memories from that time."16
September, 1943. A group photograph of Malaysian students and a lecturer at the International Language Institute in Tokyo, Japan. Tunku Abdullah is standing, second from left. The subjects taught were Japanese language, history, culture and military training for strength and physical fitness as well as for strength of character. His experiences in Japan played a major part in moulding his character.
Climbing Mount Aso in Kyushu, Japan, 1944. This was an expedition from the Miyazaki Agricultural College Tunku Abdullah was studying at as part of their education and training in Japan. Standing, third from left, is Tunku Abdullah's Forestry lecturer whom, according to Tunku Abdullah, played an important part in his "growth" in Japan. Tunku Abdullah is in foreground, right.17
The opportunities made available to him for his varied and diverse educational background were augmented by his joining the Malayan Civil Service on his return. As fate would have it, his life's training would take him onto higher levels and greater opportunities. His final post was as a senior official with a ministry in the Federal Government; and friends he made in the service of Government have contributed much in paving Melewar's way.18
War-time Japan. This group photograph of Tunku Abdullah and other selected students from the then Malaya was taken in Tokyo, 1943. From left to tight — (top row) the late Nik Yusuf, the late Bostam Kurshi, the late Hashim Naemat (bottom row) the late Syed Omar, Raja Shaeran, Tunku Abdullah, the late Syed Mansor and Raja Nong Chik. The late Nik Yusuf and the late Syed Omar died in the Hiroshima Atom Bomb attack on August 6, 1945. Tunku Abdullah considered himself lucky as he was then studying at the agricultural college in Miyazaki and survived the bombing. Food, however, was scarce and Tunku Abdullah and other students had to go round villages begging for food for six months prior to the end of the war, and of one point, for two whole months, all there was to eat was pumpkin morning, day and night.19
Even as he was pursuing a career that would prepare him for the political arena later on, he was already dis-covering, and honing, his leadership qualities in his involvement with the development of youth through the Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs and later on the Malaysian Youth Council too. In 1954, he was elected secretary to the Malaysian Association of Youth Clubs and in 1955, he became president for 19 years and later, concurrently president of Malaysian Youth Council for six years. His interest and drive in this area resulted in his being elected an executive of the World Assembly of Youth in 1969. During that time he was responsible for the establish-ment of the Asian Youth Council (AYC) with member- ship from almost all countries in Asia and was elected as its first President.20
Left: 1941 — a group photograph with students from the Penang Free School. A triumphant day for Tunku Abdullah, he scored three goals for the Kuala Kangsar Malay College football team against Penang Free School. It also proved to be the last football match for Tunku Abdullah as the war came shortly after that. Above: Tunku Abdullah's fellow students of the Kuala Kangsar Malay College Geographic Society during an excursion to Maxwell Hill, New Year's Eve, 1939. The Kuala Kangsar Malay College was then considered the 'Eton of Malaya' where all the elite children went for their education. The building in the background is the resthouse where they stayed during the visit.21
In hindsight, and from the perspective of The Melewar Corporation, his education would not have been complete without his becoming a Member of Parliament for ten years. An interesting point in his political career was when he was an incumbent MP representing Rawang. He had a lot of support from Chinese voters who were in the majority in the constituency and he won in the elections even though he was a Malay candidate, subsequently becoming the Assistant Whip of the ruling party.22
Below: 1971 — an Asian Seminar on Youth Participation organized by the Asian Youth Council in Tokyo. At this convention, Tunku Abdullah spoke on the subject of cultural heritage. There is a special committee in the A.Y.C. that decides on the various topics for each seminar, which includes educational, economic, cultural and political activities in Asia vis-a-vis other continents.23
