Spanish (7th - 12th)

Course Description:
The course will develop the language skills necessary for functional proficiency and creative use of the language. Using a communicative, interactive and task-based approach, the student will explore the language, people and culture of the Spanish-speaking communities. This course will enable students to participate in short conversations and/or use limited memorized material. Basic vocabulary, fundamental pronunciation and grammatical structures will be covered. The emphasis, however, will be on oral comprehension and spoken language.
Teacher's Bio:
I’ve been teaching Spanish since 1984 and taught at YVCC for 29 years. I retired in 2016, but once a year I teach Medical Spanish at PNWU. We are about to embark in a new experience. My relationship with students over the years has taught me that a climate of camaraderie and friendship among us has worked best to learn the most. Learning a second language is not easy, and creating the right environment for the students allows not only to be able to learn how to communicate in another language, but also to enjoy the experience. Culture is part of the daily class activities. Hugging as well as other types of cultural gestures are used often as the student practices the language in authentic communication situations. These types of gestures not only will allow the student to understand the target culture but also, at the same time, will allow to have a much deeper involvement with those around who speak Spanish. The idea is to create the right learning environment and to create a community of learners. In this type of environment, students and the teacher support each other by cooperating and working collectively.
Escenarios, Situaciones y Circunstancias by Ricardo Chama
This book is designed to help you practice the language in authentic communication situations; this means situations likely to be encountered in any Spanish speaking country. The situations are related to a particular character that moves from one host family to another. There are also other situations that, while not connected to the main story, could be used independently to give you other ideas for communication. (Available on Amazon)
¡A Interpretar! by Ricardo Chama This book has a collection of power point presentations. The focus of these presentations is on the use of strategies of visualization so the student can examine relations, infer, predict and be able to interpret a spoken language and construct meaning. (Provided by the instructor)
¡A Pronunciar! by Ricardo Chama This book is a collection of pronunciation exercises which will help you to discriminate against the sounds of different vowels. It comes with a worksheet exercise so as you read, you listen to the correct pronunciation. (Provided by the instructor)
Course Outcomes: The student should be able to participate in short conversations or at least be able to use limited memorized material by the end of the 10 weeks.
Learning methods: Learning occurs through collaborative problem-solving dialogues. The idea is to develop thinking in another language through expressive speech rather than through modeling. Performance becomes the organizing principle as you are given the opportunity to practice meaningful interaction daily.
Teaching methods: My role as a teacher is to assist the student as a guide as they are trying to use language as a tool by which messages are exchanged with the purpose of sharing ideas, feelings and opinions.
Student's assessment: When taking a test, a quiz or other type of evaluation, the student could become aware of his or her own performance. Students’ acquisition of language skills differs from individual to individual. Each student brings a different background, language skills and rate of learning to the language class. The goal is to obtain a sample of their own performance each time and to be able to compare their own development.
Teacher's Assessment: In order to perform, students are going to need a situation; therefore, they are going to have quizzes and tests in a dialogue format. This type of evaluation is a test of usage that relates language behavior to real-world situations.
Ham Radio (4th -12th)

WHAT IS HAM RADIO/AMATEUR RADIO?
Ham radio is a special license which can be obtained through a test and fee with the FCC (US government). This license grants you various privileges to use either purchased or home built radio equipment for the purposes of both personal and emergency communication (on designated radio frequencies), experimentation, and electronics skill building.
HOW DO I BECOME A HAM?
1. TAKE THIS CLASS
We will study all topics necessary to pass the entry level Technician Class ham radio license test.
The Technician Class license will permit you to use radios which can talk locally, or use various repeater systems which can talk countywide, all over a state, or even internationally. The license also includes some limited privileges for HF world wide communication, and even satellites. As it is no longer required we will not study Morse Code.
Difficulty? There is no age restriction for the license. We are recommending students be at least 13 years. However if a parent thinks their younger child is capable of handling simple math formulas (eg: V=I*R) and has a keen mind for science, younger students may join with a parent chaperon. Also parents who wish to get licensed may join us.
Fee for the class: $0
Cost of the study book: $33 (available on Amazon)
2. PASS THE TEST
After this class you will be invited to attend a special testing session with our local testing authority.
Cost to sit for the test: $15 (paid to the test host)
3. FILE FOR THE LICENSE ON THE FCC WEBSITE
Cost for the license: $35 for a ten year license
4. PURCHASE A RADIO
The average radio costs between $200 and $300. However there are budget entry level radios as low as only $30
Mr. Lemoncello's Book Club Challenge (4th - 6th)

Reading, Puzzles, Games & Adventure
Get ready for a reading adventure where books, puzzles, creativity, and teamwork come together! In this 10-week book club, students will read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein outside of class and come prepared to discuss the characters, clues, challenges, and surprises they discover along the way. Each 2-hour class will include lively discussion, reading games, puzzles, ciphers, and hands-on team challenges that encourage students to think critically, solve problems, and share their ideas.
But this is much more than a traditional book club! Students will become puzzle solvers, detectives, game designers, and members of their own Lemoncello challenge teams. They’ll complete scavenger hunts, crack secret codes, tackle an escape-room challenge, design their own game, and put their teamwork skills to the test. We’ll finish our 10-week adventure by watching the movie adaptation and comparing it with the book. Come ready to read, think, create, laugh, and take on the challenge!

Preschool
CAPE will provide preschool for the younger siblings of
studetns attending classes. Preschool will run two hours.

WHO: CAPE Members age 5 and up (no preschoolers)

CAPE Chess Club is open to CAPE members 3rd grade and higher.
Kids will have fun learning the fundamentals of chess and will be
encouraged to play chess with others to improve their chess playing abilities.
We will meet Mondays from 3:30 to 5:00, beginning Sept. 14th
at Tieton Bible Chapel in Yakima.

Homeschool PE
This 8-week homeschool PE class, led by homeschool moms
is open to all students ages 5 through high school.
Our PE class will be Friday mornings at Franklin Park (new location!)
There is no cost for this class and it is open to all CAPE students.
Parent volunteers are encouraged to help.

Pickleball
These 10-week pickleball classes, taught by Randy Brown, CAPE homeschool dad, are open to all students ages 9 to 18.
Our pickleball classes will be Friday mornings at Franklin Park.
There is no cost for these classes and they are open to all CAPE students.
Fridays 8:45 to 9:45am
(note: this class begins 15 minutes earlier than Homeschool PE)
Starts Sept 11th, ends Nov 13th (weather permitting)
Sept 18th class is optional (come watch Applefest Pickleball tournament at Franklin Park)

This class is open for all CAPE students that have taken CAPE's beginning class (Level 1) and are able to keep score, serve and rally. This class will be structured as open play coordinated by the teacher.
