Bree Yagana - Founder and Director
I am a 17-year-old senior at Langley High School and I am incredibly passionate about refugee resettlement work. After coincidentally meeting an inspiring refugee at a local library, I felt a responsibility to utilize my Dari-speaking skills to aid her, and other refugees, in their journey to self-sufficiency in America.
I have been volunteering as a Youth Ambassador for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) since my freshman year. At IRC, I teach English to refugees from different communities via Zoom. After the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the arrival of thousands of Afghan refugees in my community, I started to offer my own youth support and mentoring as part of the Refugee Resettlement Program.
I serve as an Ambassador for two resettlement nonprofits, OneAfghanistan and No One Left Behind, which provide aid to over 1500 refugees throughout NY, VA, CA, and FL and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for struggling citizens in Afghanistan.
Ultimately, I am passionate about helping both Afghan refugees in my community and advocating for education and peace in Afghanistan.
My Refugee Resettlement Program is a very personal effort and I invest my heart into each and every one of the individuals I work with. The impact has been positive and inspiring as I see many refugees leave my classes to employment or further education in community colleges.
More importantly, my work with refugees has had a far greater impact on my own personal development than on the individuals I have helped. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity.
