ESL Classes
ESL Classes are offered on Sundays at local libraries in Northern VA or DC. Location is flexible and accommodates to student location and availability. Bus routes and alternative transportation can be arranged. A variety of English language tools have been compiled to create a safe and productive learning environment. Students receive workbooks donated courtesy of Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services.
My courses do not take a typical ESL approach. I understand that refugees are often in states of uncertainty (regarding location, employment, family & immigration status) and do not have extended periods of time to learn English. Rather than focusing on perfecting grammar, courses take a more practical and personalized "conversational" approach based on student level and goals.
Since the launch of the program in 2021, I have worked with over 70 refugees, many of whom have proceeded to find employment or join community colleges.
