Spring 2023 Session 3/18-4/22
I'm a freshman at Columbia University, majoring in Mathematics and Economics. I graduated from Proof School in June '22, a middle and high school in San Francisco that specializes in advanced math. I grew up in Hanover, NH.
My experience tutoring and teaching math to younger students began when I was in 6th grade. My schedule allowed me to help out in the second grade math class once per week. Though not very frequent, I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work with the younger kids.
I arrived at Proof School the following year and was immediately inspired by the engaging, creative environment. Twice every year, Proof hosts math festivals for 4th-8th graders around the Bay Area run by the students. Some of the activities inspired me for curriculum content in this math circle.
In 11th grade I was a teaching assistant for Proof School's Algebra 1 class (6th grade). I checked in with students, answered questions, prepared and taught lessons, and even wrote fun Kahoots for the class.
I worked with a 4th grader in math enrichment for a year and a half during the pandemic. Working with her one-on-one gave me the ability to mold my curriculum to her interests and compile an archive of fun lessons, problems, and puzzles. I also worked briefly with a 7th grader on more advanced calculus concepts.
My experience has inspired me to broaden my reach to young kids in my area and share what I have learned in the form of this math circle.
