Just to get this out of the way first: you should probably get an M1 MacBook if you want to edit lots of video. But the SPX isn't useless, it's good enough to run simple edits and short 1080p clips.

I tested a few video editing apps to find ones that run native code and have GPU encoding support for faster renders (I checked using Task Manager to see if the GPU engine was active). I was surprised because I didn't know the Adreno GPU had something like Intel's QuickSync that was exposed to third party developers.

Free and paid upgrade, simple interface, big range of filter and text options even on the free version. It says it uses GPU encoding. Rendering is very slow on the free version because it adds a watermark to every frame.

Free open source Qt5-based app. Runs under emulation so it's slow for filters. It uses GPU acceleration for playback under ANGLE but doesn't support GPU encoding. I can't recommend it on the SPX because the latest builds are x86 64-bit only and the older 32-bit builds keep crashing.

Free open source app based on Shotcut. Runs under emulation without any GPU acceleration so playback can be choppy and rendering is very slow. It has a ton of filters and features like chroma key, if you don't mind the slow exporting. Also a lot more stable compared to Shotcut.

I'm looking for recommendations for video editing software to use with the MOV/H.265 HEVC file format. I have a really high spec PC that I built myself, but I've tried Corel VideoSuite Ultimate 2020, and I have also looked into Adobe Premier Pro. Corel say they can handle that codec, but my PC just crashes as soon as I try to do anything with it - Adobe have acknowledged that the files need to be converted into a different format. I have used Adobe Premier Rush and it lets me work on the files, but it has limited functionality for music editing.

This format appears to be the highest spec format for video, and I'm planning to do some music videos which might need a lot of sound editing. I have installed the Microsoft HEVC video extensions, PC is a 7th generation i7 processor, 48Gb RAM, 6gb graphics card.

Is this just an example of bleeding edge technology - nobody else has got there yet?

Have you considered trying Davinci Resolve? I have used it with 4K H.265 4:2:0 generated with an X-T3. Color grading tools are excellent. Works well on a Mac. But I know there is Windows version. You can download the very powerful freeware version 17 that has no time limits to see if it works for you.

Try VSDC or HitFilms. Like DaVinci Resolve, the free versions have enough features available for most needs. VSDC is more fully featured. There's a small cost to upgrade to a "pro" version which enables hardware acceleration especially handy if you have video card that you can utilize for video-related tasks.

I will suggest TunesKit AceMovi video editor for windows 10, I think it is a good alternative to adobe premier pro. AceMovi is also a good video editor app that contains many features for editing such as split, crop, and zoom, green screen, rotate, change speed, and many more and has a large library. And it supports MOV/H.265 HEVC and some other formats.

i have used that in my android phone to edit phone videos . does the windows version has the capabilities close to or similar to adobe premier pro ?, i haven't tried the windows version of the cyberlink power director , but the android version used to give less quality files compared to premier pro in my pc ,also didn't had many types of video exporting formats , still in android i always use it to do quick edit's for posting online etc.. but is the windows version good for professional work ? . please let me know , have a nice day ahead !

I personally used many video editing softwares and I didn't like premiere and davinci. the problem fo me is that they require much performance and occupy a lot of space. Once I have tried online video editing tool, I stopped using everything else. And I really don't see any disadvantages. So I really recommend you trying www.fastreel.com

I heard good things too about online editors recently.. but it is practical only for people who have high speed internet connection without data limit.. since uploading uncompressed video files from camera will use a lot of data and require a lot of time depending on the size and even when recording in fhd it goes beyond 20gb within 10 minutes.. so it is nice, but not very useful for everyone.. since people who could afford high speed internet without data limit which could upload 20gb in a hour.. can surely afford a m1 mac mini or macbook pro or any laptop with intel i9 or ryzen 9 and these devices can edit 4k dci videos effortlessly as you watch a movie... also premier pro and davinci etc.. only take 3gb maximum for installation space... so i am not saying you're wrong etc.. because i heard good about it from a few professionals... but storage space and performance was not an issue at all, if you were discussing about editing videos taken with camera , factoring in the size of video files will be at least 100gb totally while you were recording a small 20 minute talk with a few extra scenes.. anyway , thanks for sharing your opinion about the online editing software.. but i was just explaining the differences so people can get an idea and can choose between easily.. because it's not applicable for everyone who doesn't have an unlimited high speed internet connection which also doesn't have any type of data or speed cap. but for a travelling enthusiast who has unlimited high speed internet.. this is indeed a very good option.. since they can work using any type of device, without worrying about it's hardware capabilities. have a nice day !.

So I decided to briefly abandon my laptop and Final Cut Pro X video editor, to put Splice and my iPhone 7 to the test. Is it possible to shoot and edit an entire video on it? How difficult would it be?

Apple has announced Final Cut Pro X, the latest version of its popular high-end video editing software. Final Cut Pro X features a trackless canvas, that Apple is calling a 'Magnetic Timeline' for flexible arranging and editing of clips. It's also possible to 'audition' different combinations of clips to make it easier to choose between multiple takes. The software also features improved tagging (including auto-analysis of clips) to make it easier to manage and locate the clips you want to use. Final Cut Pro X is available from the Mac App Store for $299/179.

At the heart of Final Cut Pro X is the Magnetic Timeline, a trackless approach to editing your footage that lets you add and arrange clips wherever you want them, while other clips instantly slide out of the way. You can use Clip Connections to link primary story clips to other elements like titles and sound effects, so they stay in perfect sync when you move them. You can even combine related story elements into a Compound Clip that can be edited as a single clip. The groundbreaking new Auditions feature lets you swap between a collection of clips to instantly compare alternate takes.

Content Auto-Analysis scans your media on import and tags your content with useful information. Final Cut Pro X then uses that information to dynamically organise your clips into Smart Collections, so you can easily find the clips you want by close up, medium and wide shots as well as media type and the number of people in the shot. You can also tag parts of clips with Range-based keywords to add custom search criteria to your media.

Final Cut Pro X also includes powerful tools for audio editing and color correction, and is complemented by two companion apps, Motion 5 for professional motion graphics and Compressor 4 for advanced media encoding, available from the Mac App Store for 29.99 each.

Pricing & Availability

Final Cut Pro X is available today for 179.99 from the Mac App Store. Motion 5 and Compressor 4 are available today for 29.99 each from the Mac App Store. Full system requirements and more information on Final Cut Pro X can be found at www.apple.com/uk/finalcutpro.
