Lead by Nick Turland (Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum, Berlin) & Dr Sandra Knapp (Natural History Museum, London)
Audience: Anyone involved in taxonomy of algae, fungi or plants (including fossils) who wants to learn more about nomenclature and/or learn about what is new in the 2018 Shenzhen Code. Students and early-career taxonomists may find the course particularly useful. Maximum of 60 participants.
About the workshop: Knowledge of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (DOI https://doi.org/10.12705/Code.2018) is important for those wanting to name new species or taxa at higher ranks, but it also provides the rules for navigating the sometimes difficult to intrepret naming of the past 266 years. This two day course will cover the main principles and rules of the 2018 Shenzhen Code.
Topics include how to publish a new name, how types fix the application of names, how to find the correct name for a taxon, conservation and rejection, and special rules for fungi, algae and fossils. We will also introduce and discuss the changes that were made to the Code in the IBC in Shenzhen, China in 2017, and that are now important parts of the new rules.
The course will have morning and afternoon sessions both days (2 lectures each session). The lectures and course notes will be in English; lectures will be interactive with examples and plenty of time for questions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own nomenclatural problems to the course, where we can discuss them as a group and perhaps solve them. The course is sponsored by the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) who support and facilitate the nomenclature of algae, fungi and plants between International Botanical and Mycological Congresses (IBC, IMC).
Participants should bring to the course an internet-enabled device to access the Code (or the print version), their own nomenclatural problems and enthusiasm for problem solving. We will provide pdf copies of key documents in case of internet failure.
