Salisbury's People un-Friendly Streets

December 2020

SXR staged a protest on the Guildhall steps at the termination of the 18 month Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) .  This had enabled the City's People Friendly Streets (PFS) and was indefinetly suspended on the 2nd Dec.  The ETRO  had restricted traffic entering a few City centre streets, excluding the emergency services,  utilities, delivery, blue badge holders,  public transport, taxis and residents' vehicles ....  so pretty well any vehicle not taking a short cut or sightseeing.  During the experiment traffic levels, pedestrian footfall, shopping, pollution levels, etc.  were to have been monitored to determine its effectiveness and impact.  It was axed by our own City Council's leaders, after less than 6 weeks, four of which were during the autumn 'lockdown'. The WCC's obituary for PFS is at   https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisbury-people-friendly-streets

No Going Back

April 2020

Hashtag No Going Back campaign on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter where XR discuss things we would like to stay the same after the lock-down is lifted.

Street Swarm

March 2020

Street swarms remind us that cyclists and pedestrians hold the historic right of way. Cycling reduces the need for polluting vehicles and is better for your health, leaving room for electrified public transport and reducing noise pollution.

Tree planting

February 2020

Exctinction Rebellion Salisbury worked with Salisbury City Council to plant trees that renew our air and make the nearby substation much more appealing (link 1)

This drew attention from locals and the young trees will grow up to show how putting nature first can reduce humanities impact (Spire FM)

A Local Buying Guide for Peat Free Compost

Peat facts

For Peat's Sake!

As 2020 marked the conclusion of the Government’s 10 year transition period before the implementation of a proposed voluntary ban on the sale of peat for domestic use, we investigated compliance by local retailers: None admitted knowledge of it and nearly all continue to supply peat, if most also offered some peat free alternatives. The campaign continues with information leaflets, personal letters and Christmas cards dispatched to the owners/senior management of all the local and national retailers of peat based composts and substitutes (Congratulating the latter!). The response from a few could be taken as positive while others stated that they would only implement a ban if required to do so by law. Letters and emails were also sent to Rt Hon Lord Zac Goldsmith (Minister for Pacific and the Environment) and the Rt Hon George Eustice MP (Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), but neither have yet replied.
