Augmented reality head-up displays (AR HUDs) are expected to navigate the next-gen driving experience. The driver’s view of road will merge with the digital visual information, which is projected onto the windshield of the vehicle. This UX study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of drivers’ opinions on the AR HUD information design for a car’s adaptive behavior for latent hazards as well as their takeover tendency in partially automated vehicles.

Previous research has modeled drivers’ takeover response time in time-critical scenarios that demand a quick response. However, existing models may not be applicable for scheduled, non-time-critical takeovers as drivers take longer to resume control when there is no time pressure. This study aimed to develop a computational model to predict drivers’ takeover response time for freeway exiting in conditionally automated vehicles.

Partial and conditional automated vehicles require drivers to serve as a fallback and regain control of vehicles when necessary. During control transitions, driver situation awareness (SA) plays a crucial role in making takeover decisions and selecting the course of actions after takeover. An up-to-date systematic review of empirical research was conducted to outline a conceptual framework of factors that influence driver SA for regaining control of partially and conditionally AVs. Thirty-one SA influential factors were grouped into four clusters – task/system, situation, individual, and non-driving related task. The conceptual model provides implications for human-machine interface design and guidance for future research to investigate SA influential factors. Stakeholders who aim to assess or enhance driver SA for AV takeovers can use this review to find starting points for their work.

Conditionally automated vehicles allow drivers to turn their attention away from the driving task in certain scenarios but still require drivers to gain situation awareness (SA) upon a takeover request (ToR) and resume manual control when the system is unable to handle the upcoming situation. ToRs for non-critical events such as exiting a freeway can be scheduled way ahead of time. This study involving a web-based, supervised experiment aimed to ascertain how ToR lead time affects driver SA for resuming manual control and when to send the ToR is most appropriate in non-critical takeover events. This project aimed at condensing the current semester-long robotics curriculum developed by Texas Instruments (TI) into an up to eight-week, module-based course that can be easily understood by first-year engineering students. By conducting an interview-based experiment and content analysis, the team better understood the experience of participating in the current TI robotics project and determine what primary users would want from a modified TI robotics curriculum. This project aimed to develop a design of seating adjustment (i.e., seat length, seat height, seat position, and headrest height) in a car to accommodate 95% of short stature drivers in the US, i.e. under 5’5″ (or 1676. 4 mm). The anthropometric measures form the ANSUR II study were used to determine what measures could be used for this design.

This project aimed to propose a design of N95 respirator to accommodate as many ANSUR II population as possible. The design parameters are mask width, mask breadth, top headband length and adjustability, and bottom headband length and adjustability. An experiment was conducted to measure related anthropometric variables and subjective ratings of participants.

Connected Vehicle Systems (CVS) leverage the wireless communication networks to detect hazards with a greater range and alert drivers of hazards much earlier. However, drivers’ reliance on CVS to detect critical situations could negatively affect them maintaining situation awareness (SA) in noncritical situations when no warning is issued. This simulator study investigated the effect of CVSs on driver SA in noncritical driving scenarios after they were exposed to the CVS with different designs of collision warning lead time.
