We use and develop new electron microscopy-based and in situ nanomechanical techniques to study the behavior of materials under various environmental conditions, including mechanical deformation and temperature changes. We seek to gain mechanistic insights and establish connections between the processing, microstructure, properties, and performance of materials. In combination with advanced materials processing methods, our goal is to apply the fundamental knowledge gained to design and synthesize high-performance, durable, more affordable, and sustainable materials for structural and functional applications.
