Despite having lived for over 3,700 years and despite having seniority among the ranks of the Adepti, Xiao’s circumstances have caused him to remain mentally young.
He understands kindness and gratitude, but doesn't know how to interact with ordinary people, nor does he know what his place is among all the excitement and noise. This lonely state of existence is the source of his melancholy. It has caused time to stand still, leading to him still having a very young mentality even to this day. (Developer Insight #4)
Xiao has spent a very long time isolated, at first by force (as a slave of a cruel god) and later by choice (due to his karmic debt), therefore lacking the social bonds that would help him grow and develop. Even when he found companionship in the other yakshas, Xiao was surrounded by war and death which further reinforced his mindset of being a weapon for slaughter, never giving him the chance for meaningful introspection.
Xiao: We yakshas are not a race that thrive in peacetime. It's likely that he was drawn by the scent of bloody war.
Xiao: Slaughter is what we do best... Maybe it's the only thing we know.
Xiao: ...You could dress up the yaksha's life and call us valiant warriors, veterans of war, but... the truth is, we are slaughterers, and nothing more.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao’s most arduous battle isn’t actually against demons and the vengeful manifestations of bygone gods. His biggest struggle is against himself.
The events of his past caused Xiao to believe that there is no value in his own life and personhood. He has convinced himself that he is incapable of anything other than being a weapon of death, a tool for slaughter, something to be used and sacrificed when necessary.
Xiao: In the thousands of years that have passed, I have taken countless wraiths. If you want no trouble, stay away from me. See me as a weapon, and nothing more.
Xiao: New power? All it will be used for is death.
(Profile Voice-Over)
The guilt he carries from the massacres of his past and the torturous karma that taints his soul have made Xiao terrified of harming others. He fears being a burden and a threat. Therefore, if he cannot be used as the weapon that he thinks he is, he should keep his distance from others.
These unhealthy notions, the cruel god’s indoctrination and the survivor’s guilt he feels for being the last yaksha alive and losing so many companions to war and karma alike, are what convinced Xiao that he does not deserve love, care and companionship. He continues to use his karma as an excuse to stay isolated, even from people who are able to resist its harmful effects: Vision bearers and the Adepti. If not karma, then he simply finds other reasons to stay away.
Xiao: Ganyu is neither mortal nor Illuminated Beast. Wandering both the mortal and Adepti realms with duty as her sole guide, it was inevitable that she would become perplexed... What? Me? You believe a yaksha who knows nothing more than killing and surviving is a suitable mentor for a qilin? ...That idea of yours will stay a work of fiction.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Communication through letters, short meetings and many other solutions exist even for the people that could be affected by Xiao’s karma, yet he chooses a life of solitude although he clearly longs for companionship, as seen in his interactions with the Traveler.
Fundamentally, Xiao cannot comprehend that there are people who care about him, people who want to help him and want to be by his side despite his circumstances.
Xiao: It's too late. The connection between us is too strong. Even if you wanted to, it's too late to sever it. Hm? You've never thought to sever it?
Xiao: Countless souls have fallen prey to these hands. I too have been swallowed by the darkness — and yet you dare to drive me on. You may think of me as... your companion. You seek to find me salvation? ...You... really are a difficult being to comprehend. (Profile Voice-Over)
He can’t grasp that there are people who would visit him simply because they want to see him, to talk to him. When approached, his first instinct is to assume something happened and his service may be required. When asked for a simple chat, he is genuinely surprised.
Xiao: ...It's you, Traveler.
Xiao: Did something happen?
(Teapot Lines)
Xiao: ...Idle chatter?
Traveler: You seem a bit reluctant…
Xiao: That's not it.
Xiao: I didn't expect you to make such a request.
(Teapot Lines)
Even after Xiao learns to open up to the Traveler and talk to them about matters that weigh on his mind, he still feels the need to find a suitable excuse to persuade himself that it’s okay for him to do such things.
Traveler: Are you sure it's okay for you to tell me all this?
Xiao: It matters not. Rex Lapis had said that you are a witness. It is right that the events of the world are relayed to you.
(Perilous Trail)
His prolonged isolation, the absence of social connections, the lack of opportunities for meaningful introspection and, finally, the trauma that caused the numbing of his emotions for his own protection have left Xiao as an extremely emotionally repressed person. He is unable to recognize and navigate his own feelings.
At that moment, another special feeling blossomed in Xiao's heart. Loneliness? Peace of mind? Or was it his fears for the future? The young-seeming Adeptus searched his heart, only to find no answers. (Character Story: Vision)
This emotional numbness, repression and disconnection has convinced Xiao that he simply doesn’t possess human emotions. He uses the reality of an Adeptus and an Illuminated Beast (Peng) to rationalize why he doesn’t have human feelings. But in reality, the Adepti aren’t much different from humans. They have emotions and desires just like them.
Xiao: I am not human; I can't really understand the emotions of humans.
Xiao: "Vision", desires? Hah... do not use mortal standards to consider Adepti, I do not have desires.
(Profile Voice-Over)
He uses the same excuses to dismiss any attempts at trying to understand why people would want to do nice things for him, like the time when the Traveler goes out of their way to include Xiao in the Lantern Rite’s festivities.
Xiao: Does this serve any grander purpose?
Traveler: This way you can take part in Lantern Rite.
Xiao: ...Is that so? Hmph, human motives defy my attempts to fathom them.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Whether it’s due to a lack of understanding of his own emotions, his inability of recognizing them or a fear of admitting that he has desires like a normal person, Xiao may not acknowledge it but he longs for a day to come when he can put his spear down and wear his mask, not to fight demons, but to dance in a field of flowers to the lovely tune of that flute he remembers.
A severe lack of self-worth and an extreme amount of guilt over his past deeds led Xiao to obsessively pursue atonement. He has adopted the mindset that his life has no value unless it is used for the purpose of serving others, therefore it’s normal to put everyone else’s needs above his own and, should the situation call for it, it’s perfectly fine to sacrifice himself for their sake.
In Perilous Trail, Xiao is quick to disregard his own injuries and needs for safety and recovery. He tells everyone their safety is the priority, not his. He insists there is no need for them to endanger themselves in order to search for him. And there is the ever present issue of his karma so his mere presence is a danger to them.
It takes some effort to finally convince Xiao to join the group. Even then, he only joins for their sake, not his. He is ready to forfeit his own personal goals and maybe even his own life to help everyone else escape.
Xiao: Everyone, whether I accomplish what I came here to do or not, I must find a way to get you out safely.
Xiao: I rejoined to warn you that it's extremely dangerous here. If you stay here too long... this space may well devour you.
(Perilous Trail)
The horrors of the past and the deep-rooted negative perception he has of himself caused Xiao to always prepare for the worst scenarios. He tries to do everything on his own and he tries to shoulder the burdens by himself. This made him accustomed to the idea of sacrificing his life.
Xiao: Something has happened in Guyun Stone Forest. According to the contract, as an Adeptus, I should not get involved for now.
Xiao: But these things can be unpredictable. I have a contingency plan of my own.
Traveler: Xiao, what do you...
Xiao: Only a single mountain lies between here and Liyue Harbor.
Xiao: If things get out of control, I will defend this place myself.
(The Crane Returns on the Wind)
Xiao: ...Yanfei and Yelan are correct. I always prepare for the worst-case scenario. This mindset is deeply rooted in me... Even so, it was the most optimistic solution I could think of.
(Perilous Trail)
If Xiao could die a heroic death saving others as a yaksha in the midst of battle, it would be quite ideal. Yet, deep down, that is not how Xiao truly feels. As Yelan correctly assessed, if Xiao was so determined to go through with the plan that could potentially end his life, he wouldn’t have given others the opportunity to share their opinions. Xiao doesn’t actually want to die; he just thinks his desire to live does not matter when danger threatens other people.
Xiao: And perhaps the same is true for me. After living for so long... to die in the act of saving others would not have been a terrible thing.
Traveler: I think you know that that isn't true.
Xiao: Mm. So maybe... these thoughts are my own form of insanity.
(Perilous Trail)
A twisted mindset with a disregard for his own life mixed with the karma that always threatens to drive him to madness will lead only to disaster. But no matter what this yaksha says, his relief of living for another day is clear.
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (Xiao says nothing more. Complex emotions run across his face as he looks at the temple to Pervases.)
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (Sadness, disappointment, relief... They are all there, yet are only a small part of a far larger whole.)
The World is Silent; No One Speaks: (His expression is akin to that of a person who has been out in the blizzard for too long and seen far too much of it before finally gaining a place of respite from the battering snow.) (Perilous Trail)
Xiao’s prolonged self-isolation prevented him from developing proper social skills, even if other Adepti made efforts to include him in their gatherings during the era of the Guili Assembly. Thus, Xiao was left in a state of near complete disconnection from the rest of society.
This became an obstacle that makes Xiao less approachable and it gives him more reasons to continue living in solitude. He is stuck in a loop wherein his lack of socialization causes isolation which in turn perpetuates his social ineptitude. Socialization for him requires mental preparation.
Xiao: The parlor director went out of her way with the invitation, so it was difficult to turn her down. I had made mental preparations before agreeing to come. (Lantern Rite 3.4)
With a focus on his duty and a mindset that killing is all he is capable of, Xiao will sometimes misread situations or misunderstand people’s intentions.
Paimon: And it just so happens that we've got a real Adeptus with us too! If Xiao were to teach Starsnatcher a lesson, you can bet he'll never dare to pose as an Adeptus ever again!
Xiao: No. I only slay demons — I do not kill mortals.
Paimon: ...Who said anything about killing him!?
Xiao: …
(Xiao Story Quest)
Xiao: Finished taking care of business?
Paimon: Oh, there wasn't any "business"... we were just saying goodbye to our friends.
(Perilous Trail)
To make matters worse, human conversations appear to be a lot more complex compared to those of the straight-forward and honest Adepti.
Xiao: The Adepti all have their specialties, making most of them proud and arrogant. Everything they say is straight from the heart... It never gets too complicated.
Xiao: But this time…
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
This reinforces Xiao’s reluctance to talk to other people. He restrains himself in order to avoid unpleasant situations. When the Traveler reassures Xiao that they will be by his side and help him out, he feels a great sense of relief. Xiao is someone who longs for bonds and connections, but doesn’t know how to obtain them.
Xiao: I will control myself while I am in the city.
Xiao: I'll try to speak... as little as possible.
Traveler: You can say whatever you want. I'll bail you out.
(Teapot Lines)
Although Xiao claims that he doesn’t “partake in activities like chatting”, which in reality means that he simply doesn’t have or allow himself any opportunities to do so, it is evident that deep down he wishes to talk to others.
Xiao: Venti? So that's the name he goes by. His tunes are... forget it.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao: Today...
Xiao: Forget it, it's nothing. Good night.
(Teapot Lines)
Alas, the combination of not believing his thoughts are worth sharing and the genuine awkwardness of not knowing how to express himself, often lead Xiao to simply give up by rationalizing it as acceptance of his circumstances.
Xiao: No matter. I know my circumstances.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
For most humans, whether it’s received positively or negatively, obtaining a Vision is a very memorable moment in their life as it is believed to be acknowledgment and recognition from the gods. And yet, Xiao does not remember the moment he received his Vision.
As a yaksha, Xiao possesses innate elemental powers so the benefits granted by a Vision may not be of much use to him, but that’s not the reason why Xiao let this particular event fade into memory.
Visions are the manifestations of one's ambition (hope, wish, dream, desire). Therefore, for someone to receive a Vision they must have a dream and a dream Xiao has. But he denies it. He does not acknowledge it. He pretends it's not there. Time and again he tries to convince himself he does not harbor any desires.
Xiao: "Vision", desires? Hah... do not use mortal standards to consider adepti, I do not have desires.
(Profile Voice-Over)
With friendship raised, however, Xiao begins being a little more honest with the Traveler and with himself.
Xiao: Hiding? I'm hiding nothing. I just won't speak of desire to others. Do mortals not have a rule about spoken wishes never coming true? Hm? What do you mean that's not the same?
(Profile Voice-Over)
He longs for a day to come when he will wear the mask and dance — not to conquer demons, but to the tune of that flute amid a sea of flowers.
(Xiao Namecard)
Xiao’s refusal to acknowledge his dreams and his desires stems from the pain he suffered at the hands of the god who enslaved him. Last time Xiao had desires, they were exploited to the point of causing great torment and agony to others as well as to himself. This experience, along with the god’s indoctrination, which successfully destroyed Xiao’s ability to believe in love and good things, taught Xiao that his desires should be buried somewhere deep to be forgotten.
The guilt Xiao carries over his past deeds is another reason why he believes he is not allowed to have any desires. How could Xiao dare to wish for his dreams to come true when he is responsible for taking away the dreams of others?
Xiao doesn't recall the moment he received his Vision because he doesn't want to remember. The Vision is a reminder — it’s the proof that his dreams and his desires are real and do exist, something Xiao desperately tries to deny.
The circumstances of his past convinced Xiao that he is not allowed to want things; perhaps even his own life is something he is only allowed to keep so long as he spends it by serving and protecting others, their lives and their dreams.
On a thematic level, Visions represent a moment of true insight. An instant in which they understood themselves and their desires without any inhibitions, thus letting their true will upon the world. Anemo represents the truth of freedom and self-determination. Therefore it is likely that Xiao obtained his Vision when he chose to guard and protect the newly formed Liyue; a choice he made for himself instead of a will being imposed on him.
Additionally, Xiao chose to take responsibility for his past deeds, for his own actions and naivety, and do something about it by choosing his present actions and the course of his future, dedicating himself to Liyue. He fulfilled all themes that represent the element of Anemo so it was inevitable that he would receive an Anemo Vision.
Alas, as it is with the other Vision bearers, Xiao failed to see the truth for more than an instant. He became bound by his duty, believing that he should and would be tied to it forever, unable to realize the freedom he has in following other paths in life.
It is only when he meets the Traveler that things begin to change because the Traveler brings Xiao the things he wants but cannot admit to wanting.
Traveler: You wouldn't go to the festival, so we brought the festival to you.
Xiao: You "brought the festival to me"?
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
The Traveler’s status as an outsider, an alien with no connection to Teyvat and all that happened within, is what permits Xiao to begin admitting things not only to them but also to himself. After millennia of denial, he finally allows himself to enjoy the beautiful lanterns of the Lantern Rite. Perhaps in time he might come to grasp his freedom once more.
Almond Tofu is Xiao’s favourite dish and it’s the only happiness he allows himself, likely because it’s an object and therefore something he can’t possibly harm. The sweet taste, however, is not what Xiao actually enjoys. He loves Almond Tofu because of its texture, which is very similar to the dreams he used to devour.
Xiao: The taste of Almond Tofu feels like a fond dream…
(Profile Voice-Over)
When Xiao was under the control of the cruel god, he was forced to devour other people’s dreams. Amidst all the suffering he endured, it is likely that devouring sweet dreams was Xiao’s only source of happiness at the time. Unfortunately, obtaining this happiness meant stealing it from others and crushing their spirit.
Luckily, Almond Tofu is an inanimate object that Xiao can’t hurt and he doesn’t need to steal. He can drop by Wangshu Inn for a bowl whenever he pleases. Wangshu Inn was built by the Qixing to support Xiao in his fight against the demons, after all.
Although eating a dish that reminds Xiao of the sweet dreams he used to devour might be a strange thing to do, it is likely a coping mechanism for him. It’s a form of claiming control and agency over his past actions since, in the present, he has the ability to control whether he eats the dish or not. And unlike the dreams he used to devour, eating Almond Tofu doesn’t harm the provider in any way, so Xiao doesn’t need to feel guilty when he allows himself to enjoy this little bit of happiness.
Sadly, the dream-eating Xiao was once forced to do has likely caused him to be very sensitive to various tastes and textures, making it hard for him to stomach human food, so he continues eating things like snow; a flavorless substance of frozen water.
Narrator: To everyone's shock, the evil dragon then swallowed the fighter's dream in one big gulp.
Wicked Dragon: It is just as I thought. Thin and crunchy, though empty under its shell. A most marvelous texture.
Wicked Dragon: I've had snack after snack, but dinner still eludes me.
Wicked Dragon: Snacks are distractions; in the end, they have no true substance.
Wicked Dragon: What's more, some of these just made me feel sick.
Wicked Dragon: Now that my stomach is churning, I have no strength left to face off against the king.
(Drama Phantasmagoria)
Xiao claims he has no interest in mortal food because cooking is tedious, the wait is long and some cooking practices are quite perplexing to him. That is not a complete lie, but it isn’t the whole truth either.
Xiao: I have no interest in mortal food. Cooking is tedious and the wait is long. The one thing I can manage to stomach is Almond Tofu.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Other Adepti have no aversion to human food. Cloud Retainer, for instance, calls human dishes "delights of the mortal realm." It is not that Xiao can’t understand the appeal of mortal food, he is simply unfamiliar with it and doesn’t want to explain his deeper reasons for avoiding it because they would bring back a lot of painful memories.
Memories and emotions are elements that likely affect Xiao’s ability to stomach food. Xiao is able to tolerate eating Grilled Ticker Fish, Pervases’ favourite dish, out of a desire to feel closer to one of his old yaksha companions. Likewise, he tolerates Xiangling’s cooking during the Moonchase Festival because it’s a request from the Traveler, and it’s also the first time the Traveler called Xiao’s name.
The Teyvat Food Notes offer another example of Xiao eating human food after connecting it to a memory. In one of the stories, Xiao and the Traveler prepare a meal together. The Traveler prepares Mint Jelly for Xiao on his birthday out of a desire to give him something new he can try that is just close enough to what he usually eats.
Xiao: Not the same as Almond Tofu, but not bad. Actually… I don’t like Almond Tofu just for its taste. But because it brings back some memories for me. The jelly we made today is also a special memory, thank you.
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Beneath Xiao’s battle-hardened exterior, his tormented mind and tainted soul, there is a gentle heart. The soft heart of a person who cares but does not know how to express it. Xiao is the kind of person to go out of his way to return a stolen doll to a little girl or to help a wandering ghost.
Little Luo: One day, when I was in the forest, I met a handsome, dashing adeptus — it was as if he had popped right out of a story book!
Little Luo: I smiled at him, but he didn't smile back.
Little Luo: He just returned the doll that the hilichurls stole back to me…
(NPC Dialogue)
Paimon: That... Dusky Ming. She's...
Xiao: When conquering demons, on occasion, you can come across spirits who have never hurt anyone, yet are also not yet able to be moved on.
Xiao: So I asked the innkeeper and the boss if they could keep her here for a time…
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
He always warns others to keep their distance and though his words may seem harsh or cold, they come from a place of sincere worry and concern. Xiao does not want to endanger others.
Xiao: Mortal souls are not as resilient as those of Adepti, and their blood can't bear such a concentration of Adeptal energy.
Xiao: It's for your own good, hurry up and leave.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
Xiao: The karma I carry is dangerous to humans. Keep your distance.
(Perilous Trail)
Xiao: I will be your guardian. But... don't get close to me, and don't hinder me. Or else, you will regret it.
(Profile Voice-Over)
When the Traveler befriends Xiao, he begins to care for them on a more personal level, and later he makes an oath to them to always answer the Traveler’s call no matter the time or place.
Xiao: But stay vigilant. Keep your eyes open for any menace. If you find yourself in trouble... speak my name.
Traveler: Sure you'd make it into the city in time to come to the rescue?
Xiao: Anywhere. Anytime.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: If you encounter the trouble of losing your direction in the wilderness, the trouble of meeting thieves, the trouble of swordsmen of water and fire, the trouble of spirits and poison, the trouble of evil beasts and poisonous insects, the trouble of malicious enemies, then call my name. “Adeptus Xiao". I will be here when you call.
(Profile Voice-Over)
And Xiao does indeed answer the Traveler’s call as promised, although these summons are often for simple things, like asking information or being included in mundane activities, because the Traveler does not wish to exploit Xiao’s kindness nor put him in harm’s way.
Time and again, Xiao advises the Traveler to be careful and he reminds them to call him if there is any trouble. It’s these simple actions that reveal how much Xiao cares.
Xiao: But stay vigilant. Keep your eyes open for any menace. If you find yourself in trouble... speak my name.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: This area is not safe. So...
Traveler: I'll be careful.
(Uninvited Guests)
Xiao: You should also exercise caution. And if there's any danger...
Traveler: Yeah, I know.
Xiao: Good.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Xiao: If you encounter a difficult situation, don't be stubborn. Call my name. I will make it right.
(Teapot Lines)
Xiao: But when demonic forces are involved, things can spiral out of control... If that happens, be sure to call my name again.
Traveler: I will.
Traveler: Thank you, Xiao.
(Baizhu Story Quest)
During Lantern Rite 3.4 the Traveler is looking for a mysterious Adeptus who is known to have saved a person from drowning. Paimon convinces the Traveler to pretend to drown in hopes of attracting that Adeptus. Upon hearing the cries for help, Xiao immediately shows up to save the Traveler.
Although the Traveler is very strong and capable, Xiao doesn’t question the situation. He simply rushes to the rescue, once again displaying how much he cares about them. After the situation becomes clear, Xiao gently reprimands the Traveler for their actions.
Xiao: Glad you're okay.
Traveler: You're leaving already?
Xiao: As far as I know, the one you seek is no yaksha. And one last thing...
Xiao: ...this approach is too worrying, don’t try it again next time.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Xiao’s gentleness shines not only through his desire to protect the Traveler from physical harm, but also through a desire to protect their well-being as well as the things that are dear to them.
Xiao: I will protect this haven. For your sake.
(Teapot Lines)
Xiao: Thank you for being willing to recount your travels to me. Though there were some close calls, it seems your journey went well.
Xiao: I have no special anecdotes with which to return the favor... Take this bag of snacks instead. They say that this dessert can restore one's energy, though I do not know if it is to your taste.
(White Day 2023)
In a simple game like the Genius Invokation, Xiao is never once concerned with his loss. He instead praises the Traveler’s skill. What he is concerned about, however, is whether the Traveler is having fun and he becomes visibly worried when he wins over them.
Xiao: …I hope you’re still having fun.
Xiao: That’s enough for now.
(Genius Invokation)
Xiao’s namecard reveals his hidden desires. It also reveals his fondness for music, dance, and flowers — things Xiao likes that have no relation to what he is or what he does. They are likely things Xiao would have pursued if he had a different life. Perhaps the day will come when this yaksha will allow himself to enjoy such pastimes.
He longs for a day to come when he will wear the mask and dance — not to conquer demons, but to the tune of that flute amid a sea of flowers.
(Xiao Namecard)
Xiao: Oh, right, and this bard was performing in Dihua Marsh.
Xiao: It was a... moving melody, and it made me feel relaxed and at ease. I... couldn't help but stay and listen.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
He may think of himself as a ruthless weapon capable of little more than slaughter, but it is quite clear that the ferocious mask of this yaksha hides a very innocent and gentle heart.
There was nothing for me to do today. So, I decided I would find a Crystalfly for you — to put in your hair. I thought that... it would look nice.
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2021)
Xiao has spent millennia protecting the human world under Rex Lapis’ decree. The contract was made for many reasons: to repay Rex Lapis’ benevolence and to seek atonement for the past deeds, but it was also made out of a genuine desire to protect others.
Xiao always keeps his distance from the hustle and bustle of human society. This is not because he doesn't care about humanity, but is due to his role as a protector. He must wage war against dark forces out of sight of humans, and endure a suffering that is incomprehensible to them. Despite this, he does not despise humanity. Humans are the foundation of his millennia-old contract with Rex Lapis, and the reason he silently fights to protect every living soul in Liyue.
(Developer Insight #4)
Xiao cares deeply about the people of Liyue. He performs his duty to protect the nation with diligence, he guards the roads where people frequent to keep them safe and he takes the time to help every person he finds in trouble.
Dongsheng: But the good times couldn't last. I got into an accident in Dihua Marsh, and was seriously injured.
Dongsheng: Fortunately, a masked adeptus came to my rescue, and I was barely able to escape with my life.
(NPC Dialogue)
A certain fisherman was once attacked by monsters who suddenly fled after espying a cold light glittering on the surface of the water. Running back to the safety of Wangshu Inn, the fisherman related his experience to the manager, who simply smiled and advised him to prepare a serving of Almond Tofu and place it on a table facing south — just as a little token of appreciation for the Adepti.
(Item Description)
His efforts are not purely out of his sense of duty. He listens to people’s wishes and prayers for peace, both things that undoubtedly motivate him to continue guarding Liyue in earnest.
Xiao: Whether yours or Liyue's, I hear all cries for help, all prayers for peace, and all the wishes carried by the lanterns.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao has spent too long in isolation, disconnected from the world around him. He watches over humans from a distance, full of wonder and curiosity for this fleeting but brilliant world. Alas, he doesn’t know how to get close and he doesn’t believe there is a place for him amid the joy and excitement.
Xiao: Liyue is changing. Rapidly... Forget it, it means nothing to me.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Even if Xiao had the chance to get closer, it would be difficult for him. His karma is a constant reminder of the threat his mere existence poses to mortals. His power is too dangerous and destructive. He fears harming other people. He does not wish to endanger those he works so hard to protect.
Xiao: This matter is out of my control, so I need to be cautious.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Xiao: When the time comes, I hope you shall act promptly and decisively...
Xiao: Because if I become involved, there is a possibility that the streets of Liyue Harbor will be painted red this Lantern Rite.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: When hunting demons, I just want bystanders out of the area, so I can focus on fighting.
Xiao: ...So this is what human construction looks like up close.
(Teapot Lines)
It is only when he is alone and away from anyone he might harm that Xiao allows himself to indulge his curiosity about the human world, the mortal habits, the things people say and the things they do.
Today, I walked alone on the beaches of the Guyun Stone Forest and picked up several Starconches along the way. I heard that they contain secrets and can be used to send messages. But when I put them to my ear, I heard no voice, just the hollow sound of the wind.
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2022)
This indulgence is fleeting, however, because someone like him does not belong in the shimmering lights of the mortal society. And so, Xiao tries to convince himself that he doesn’t care, that the human world and everything in it has no meaning to him.
Xiao: Huh, a Mingxiao Lantern nonetheless. A fleeting creation of human hand. It means nothing to me.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: The use of these items... nevermind, I'm not interested.
(Opening Treasure Chest)
Zhongli cares deeply about Xiao and he is the one person who perhaps understands Xiao the most. And it is precisely because of that that Zhongli is unable to get close to him. Zhongli cannot be the person Xiao needs because Xiao does not allow it.
Xiao was rescued from a cruel life of enslavement by Zhongli, then known as the powerful god Morax. After that point, Xiao became fiercely loyal to Morax but his loyalty turned into idolization and the gratitude he felt towards this benevolent god became a debt Xiao could never repay. In Xiao’s eyes, Morax became the new master while he became the loyal servant.
Thus, Xiao developed a perception of Zhongli as the divine lord who must be served and obeyed. This perception may have also been influenced by the trauma Xiao developed under his previous master: if Xiao does not obey and behave, he will get hurt.
Zhongli is able to see right through Xiao and recognize the things that torment him, but he is unable to help because he recognizes that his words have power over this yaksha. Even if Zhongli has good intentions and wishes to give Xiao some well-meaning advice, he understands that the words he speaks might be taken as an order. In Xiao’s mind Zhongli is not a friend who cares but the divine master whose commands must be followed.
If Zhongli chooses his words carelessly, he might compromise Xiao’s free will because Xiao will feel compelled to follow what he is told. If Zhongli attempts to discuss Xiao’s problems, the latter will be obligated to comply and then will proceed to feel guilty for burdening his master with problems that should not concern his lord. Such things will only perpetuate Xiao’s problems, from the time he was forced to serve the evil god and everything that came after. No matter what happens, Zhongli must respect Xiao’s choices as well as the distance he chooses to put between them.
Xiao made a contract with Rex Lapis to protect Liyue out of his own volition. This was likely one of Xiao’s few personal wishes after being granted freedom. Even if some of the motives behind the wish were unhealthy — a desperation to repay debts and to be of service to others out of guilt — Rex Lapis must have felt obligated to grant it. Xiao deserved to have his wishes and his free will respected.
Unfortunately, this only widened the gap between the two of them. Xiao already had a negative opinion of himself, but after he became tainted with karma, as a result of his yaksha duties, he found yet more reasons to stay away from Zhongli. Someone like him could not possibly dare to be around the person he respects and reveres so much. He would not dare to inconvenience the person he owes so much to.
Xiao continues to fulfill his duty to this day, even after Rex Lapis’ “death” rendered all contracts null, partially because Xiao genuinely doesn’t know what to do with himself when he isn’t killing demons, and partially because he still sees Zhongli as Rex Lapis, his master. Serving his master is all that Xiao knows, and Zhongli understands that. Maintaining this master-servant relationship, unhealthy as it may be, is important, lest Xiao will lose the only social tie he has left.
In Perilous Trail, Xiao feels obligated to ask Zhongli for permission before daring to temporarily leave his duty in pursuit of his desire to uncover Bosacius’ fate. Despite disagreeing with the idea, Zhongli has no choice but to approve it.
Zhongli: ...This trip may be dangerous
Zhongli: Yet you insist on going
Xiao: I have guarded this place for several hundred years
Xiao: Only to seek the nameless yaksha
Xiao: Do I request your approval…
(Perilous Trail)
Zhongli had to respect this rare display of a personal wish coming from Xiao. And he understood that it’s something Xiao needed to do on his own. Accompanying Xiao out of worry would only make the yaksha feel guilty for burdening his lord. Thus, Zhongli quietly watched over Xiao from a distance, only interfering when it was absolutely necessary. Then, he left immediately and denied his involvement in hopes of reducing the feelings of debt and guilt Xiao would undoubtedly feel after being rescued by Rex Lapis again.
Paimon: So, what were you doing at The Chasm?
Zhongli: Hmm? Was I at The Chasm? How curious. I must admit that this is the first time that I'm hearing of such a thing.
Paimon: Huh!? Stop playing dumb!
Zhongli: Haha, why would I "play dumb"? Hmm, this fan is of high quality indeed.
Paimon: Zhongli!?
Zhongli: ...Now that I am on vacation, I just take my time and walk around. I'd say that anything I run into is a happenstance of fate, for which I shall take no credit.
(The Tales Behind the Fan)
As the days pass by, Zhongli continues to prepare special medicine for Xiao, and sometimes visits him at Wangshu Inn to give him words of comfort, though always under the guise of an errand. Whether there is truth in those errands or not, Zhongli always uses the same convenient excuse: that he is visiting due to requests from Director Hu or other reasons. He just so happens to be passing by Wangshu Inn. This way Zhongli can check on Xiao’s wellbeing without making him believe it is a burden or an obligation. And Xiao, earnest as he is, never doubting his lord, believes it.
Xiao: ...It's almost Lantern Rite, yet you took all the trouble coming here...
Zhongli: *sigh* The director has a way of making it difficult to decline...
Xiao: Rex Lapis... May I ask what troubles you?
Zhongli: The director asked me to buy sesame oil in preparation for the celebrations.
Xiao: ...?
Xiao: Then why would you... come all the way to Wangshu Inn...
Zhongli: I had a pleasant chat with Chef Yanxiao and received some spices from him. And... see? Here's some matsutake and a portion of ham.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Zhongli: In truth, I'm here because Director Hu dispatched me to purchase some items in preparation for Lantern Rite.
Xiao: I see. Much like she does every year. Much like she'll do next year, I would imagine.
(Lantern Rite 4.4)
Zhongli knows that he can do no more than that, so he puts his hopes on the Traveler whose status as an outsider might give Xiao the much-needed freedom to be himself. With the Traveler’s help, perhaps he will learn to open up.
Zhongli: He is given to solitude. But I suspect that he would not turn away a reliable companion such as yourself.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
And indeed that is so. The Traveler became the catalyst that set Xiao on the path of healing by telling him the things he needs to hear, the things that Zhongli wishes he could say but can’t.
Paimon: Xiao also said that he wouldn't have been able to escape without your help.
Zhongli: Oh? Did he say so? Interesting.
Zhongli: How time flies — even he has learned to open up to others.
(The Tales Behind the Fan)
And it is through the Traveler that Zhongli will eventually be able to speak to Xiao. By addressing the Traveler, Zhongli is able to get things past Xiao’s guard. Mistaking it as a story for the Traveler instead of an order for the servant, Xiao finally hears what he really needs to hear. Zhongli was never Xiao’s master. He has always been Xiao’s friend.
Zhongli: But whether to me, Streetward Rambler, Cloud Retainer, or younger Adepti such as Xiao and Ganyu, those Adepti and gods that may seem extraordinary to humans are something more akin to close companions.
Zhongli: This was as true back then as it is right now.
Xiao: Rex La— I mean, Zhongli, what you're saying is...
Zhongli: It looks like you understood what I meant.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Xiao first meets the Traveler on the terrace of the Wangshu Inn, when the latter is on a quest to meet the Adepti to clear their name of wrongful accusations as well as to inform them of Rex Lapis’ passing.
Although Xiao is curious and comes down from the roof to meet the Traveler, likely sensing something different in their aura, he soon warns them that being around an Adeptus is dangerous, especially one marred by karma like himself. But there is no time for explanations. The sooner this stranger departs, the better. Xiao instructs the Traveler to leave and then he disappears.
Xiao: Mortal souls are not as resilient as those of Adepti, and their blood can't bear such a concentration of Adeptal energy.
Xiao: It's for your own good, hurry up and leave.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
It is also likely that Xiao wanted to avoid any form of unnecessary interaction due to his poor social skills. And maybe he mistook the Traveler as a mortal seeking blessings from the Adepti, blessings that he is not capable of bestowing. After all he is a mere slaughterer.
After seeking help and advice from the folks of the Wangshu Inn, the Traveler returns with Almond Tofu, Xiao’s favourite dish, so this time he stays and listens to the Traveler. Yet despite hearing the disturbing news of Rex Lapis’ passing, Xiao hides his emotions and maintains a stoic demeanor. He does not lower his guard.
The dialogue that follows makes it quite evident that Xiao isn’t happy with the idea of getting close to the mortals — out of fear of harming them — but he must adhere to the contract. It is also here that Xiao unwittingly reveals his gentle side to the Traveler.
Paimon: That... Dusky Ming. She's...
Xiao: When conquering demons, on occasion, you can come across spirits who have never hurt anyone, yet are not yet able to be moved on.
Xiao: So I asked the innkeeper and the boss if they could keep her here for a time…
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
Next time Xiao meets the Traveler is atop the Jade Chamber in the fight against Osial. Xiao shares some of his power with them, after it is revealed that they are quite strong in body and spirit and can withstand Adeptal energy — something that would later help Xiao tolerate the Traveler’s presence, knowing that they are more resilient than normal humans.
When the Jade Chamber’s platform breaks during battle, Xiao rushes to save the Traveler from falling to their death. Why the Traveler? Perhaps the Traveler’s brief display of thoughtfulness during their short meeting, going out of their way to bring Almond Tofu to talk to him, left an impression on Xiao. Here, his soft and caring side is brought out as he gently helps the Traveler stand.
Xiao: Be careful now.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
Sometime after the events of the Archon Quest, Xiao meets the Traveler while they are accompanying Ganyu on her trials. Xiao doesn’t interact with the Traveler too much, as he is focused on the trials and doesn’t want to spend any unnecessary amount of time around others. That said, the Traveler learns here that Xiao can be approachable and admirable in his own way, despite his strict words. This, along with the care and gentleness Xiao had shown when saving the Traveler, will later make them more willing to talk to him.
Traveler: It seems that Xiao understands Ganyu quite well.
Traveler: Xiao might be a good teacher after all.
(Ganyu Story Quest)
At a later date, Xiao is approached by the Traveler while he is out killing mutated Hilichurls. Believing that these mutations were caused by his karma, Xiao’s guilt seeps through the dialogue.
Xiao: I was purging some living beings that had been tainted by the demonic. It would appear that I have caused you some trouble.
Paimon: (Huh? He isn't usually this polite, what's going on...)
Paimon: But you were exorcizing demons, how is that causing trouble?
Xiao: That is because the changes that occurred in these monsters stem from me — or more precisely, from the karma I have accumulated.
(Xiao Story Quest)
When Xiao discovers the Traveler has read about his past in the book called Yakshas: The Guardian Adepti, he quickly dismisses it as fiction. Though the book may contain inaccuracies, it does depict the general truth about the yakshas and their karmic debt. However, Xiao is not yet ready to talk about his past with someone, one he barely knows at that.
The yakshas took pride in their duty of protecting Liyue and wanted no sympathy. While that is true for Xiao as well, he wants no sympathy for other reasons, too. He may think he doesn’t deserve it, because he sees his burdens as a fair price to pay for his past deeds, or he may be mistaking it for pity.
Paimon persuades Xiao to let her and the Traveler help him purge a cavern of demonic influence by treating their help as penance for being “rude” to him earlier. Xiao, being familiar with the desire for atonement and knowing that the Traveler is not weak, decides that it may be alright for them to tag along this one time.
Paimon: W—Wait! Take us with you! We'll be a big help, Paimon promises!
Xiao: No need. I am used to fighting alone, and in any case these mutations originated from me to begin with...
Paimon: Well then... Oh! Consider it Paimon's penance for being accidentally rude just now! ...Please?
Xiao: ...
Xiao: ...Come on then.
(Xiao Story Quest)
While clearing the cavern, Xiao learns of Starsnatcher and realises that he is to blame for the Hilichurls congregating in this place. He concludes that he must confiscate the Sigil of Permission that is currently in Starsnatcher’s hands, but dealing with mortals is troublesome.
Xiao chooses to confront Starsnatcher through the Dream Trawler art. This way he can talk to a mortal without harming them with his karma. Knowing that the Traveler’s goals align with his, Xiao asks the Traveler to assist him with preparations, and in return (he dares not ask favors without recompense) he will teach them his Adeptus art, one that he likely uses for his own meditation to keep karma at bay.
When the Traveler returns with the necessary items for the ritual, Xiao learns that Pervases was still lingering in the mortal realm. After the Starsnatcher issue is dealt with, Xiao begins to reminisce over Pervases and he decides to try his old companion’s favourite dish for the first time. This way Xiao might be able to connect with him or honor him in some way.
This is the first time the Traveler witnesses a small glimpse of Xiao’s vulnerable side as he lets his guard down ever so slightly. Still, now that things got more personal, Xiao wants to be alone. He is not used to company, especially at a time like this. And he does not wish to show his vulnerability to anyone.
Xiao: Was there anything else? I... am accustomed to eating alone.
Traveler: We'll leave you be then...
Paimon: (Xiao seems a bit lost in his memories... Best we don't disturb him...)
(Xiao Story Quest)
After the events of Alatus Chapter: Act I, the Traveler helps around the Wangshu Inn with various errands. They learn from Yanxiao that, due to him being very busy lately, Xiao hasn’t been able to have his daily serving of Almond Tofu. Hearing this the Traveler decides to fulfill this small wish for the yaksha in return for his previous help. Thus, the Traveler prepares a special version of Almond Tofu called “Sweet Dream” which becomes Xiao’s signature dish.
Traveler: I want to give you another special Almond Tofu that you can't get at Wangshu Inn.
Xiao: …Alright.
Traveler: Look, these arranged sugar beads are very similar to the color of your necklace!
(Teyvat Food Notes)
This kind gesture leads to Xiao opening up to the Traveler a little more.
Xiao: I have no interest in mortal food. Cooking is tedious, and the wait is long. Almond Tofu alone is what I can force down. The taste of Almond Tofu is very similar to “Sweet Dream”...
(Teyvat Food Notes)
Later on, the Lantern Rite arrives. Verr Goldet asks the Traveler to persuade Xiao to come along for the festival. She sees that they’ve grown somewhat familiar with him, so she hopes that they might be able to reach out to Xiao and convince him to give the festival a chance. The Lantern Rite is dedicated to heroes like Xiao after all. He deserves to enjoy the festivities like everyone else.
In the days leading up to the festival, Xiao senses a malignant influence in Liyue Harbor and goes to investigate. Soon he is approached by the Traveler. Xiao asks them to take responsibility for this potential threat, as it comes from the mortal world. Xiao does not wish to get involved with mortal matters out of fear of things getting out of his control, leading to him harming people. Instead, he entrusts the Traveler with this matter.
Xiao: When the time comes, I hope you shall act promptly and decisively...
Xiao: Because if I become involved, there is a possibility that the streets of
Liyue Harbor will be painted red this Lantern Rite.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
While in the process of helping Xiao deal with this mortal threat, the Traveler makes a first attempt at inviting him to watch the lanterns together. Xiao, however, does not want to be in crowded places. This is partially because of his karma that would harm others and partially because he doesn’t believe he deserves a place among the joyful festivities. He offers, with a hint of reluctance, Wangshu Inn as an alternative. The desire for company is hidden beneath his offer.
Traveler: Wait!
Xiao: What is it?
Traveler: Next time we meet...
Xiao: Huh?
Traveler: Let's make it somewhere with a view of the Mingxiao Lantern.
Xiao: ...I am not partial to crowded areas. Especially at this time of the year.
Xiao: When this matter is resolved... come to Wangshu Inn.
Xiao: In previous years, the Mingxiao Lantern has been visible even from there.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Later, the Traveler finds Xiao at the Wangshu Inn and makes another attempt at inviting him to join the festival. When the Traveler informs Xiao that the Mingxiao Lantern is designed after Skybracer, he ponders over it a little. His curiosity is piqued and he wishes to see it, but he disregards the thought, insisting the lantern has no meaning to him. In the end, Xiao declines.
Xiao: "Skybracer..."
Xiao: Huh, a Mingxiao Lantern nonetheless. A fleeting creation of human hand. It means nothing to me.
Xiao: If this short-lived spectacle is one you wish to witness, I suggest you go to the city.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Unable to do anything else, the Traveler consults with the Wangshu Inn personnel to find a solution. The Traveler is not going to give up on Xiao. After a short brainstorming session, they all begin setting up a mini-festival just for him — Almond Tofu and Grilled Ticker Fish included. Xiao is befuddled but also very curious, so he goes along with the Traveler’s strange antics.
Xiao: What now?
Traveler: We'd like you to come to Lantern Rite with us.
Xiao: ...I don't like crowded places. You can go enjoy it by yourself.
Traveler: I didn't say you have to go to Liyue Harbor.
Xiao: ...What do you mean?
Traveler: You wouldn't go to the festival, so we brought the festival to you.
Xiao: You "brought the festival to me"?
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao: So this is what you meant by bringing the festival to me... *sigh* Is there no end to the peculiarities of human behavior?
Xiao: Does this serve any grander purpose?
Traveler: This way you can take part in Lantern Rite.
Traveler: Lantern Rite is meant to include everyone.
Xiao: ...Is that so? Human motives defy my attempts to fathom them.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
Xiao is incapable of understanding why anyone would go out of their way to do something like this for someone like him. He declares it a peculiarity of human behaviour and gives up on any attempt at understanding it. He may not wish to admit it, but deep down he is happy.
After the meal, the Traveler makes another attempt at inviting Xiao to see the lanterns. He, of course, declines. Xiao strongly believes that someone like him has no place among the festivities.
Xiao: You may take your leave. There's nothing for me over there.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
The Traveler then suggests that he can at least keep them company on the way to Liyue Harbor. Together with Paimon, they find the convincing excuse of needing an escort because the road is long and danger may be lurking. It is an obvious lie and the Traveler has already proven themselves at this point, but Xiao craves company and this excuse is just enough to fool himself into thinking that it’s okay to go with them.
Once they reach the outskirts of the city, Xiao finds himself opening up to the Traveler. He doesn’t say a lot and he stops himself from talking too much, but he nonetheless lets himself be vulnerable in their presence, even if only for a moment.
Xiao: I...don't like crowds.
Xiao: No cares in the world, so peaceful, so joyful... I am different from them.
Xiao: Too long have I spent slaughtering, accompanied by the burden of suffering that follows in its wake. Crossing paths with all those jubilant people will only make me...
Xiao: …Let’s end this topic here.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
The Traveler makes one final attempt at inviting Xiao to go to the city with them which ends in failure once again. But before the Traveler leaves, Xiao makes a promise. If they are ever in danger, they can speak his name and he will come to help.
Xiao: But stay vigilant. Keep your eyes open for any menace. If you find yourself in trouble... speak my name.
Traveler: Sure you'd make it into the city in time to come to the rescue?
Xiao: Anywhere. Anytime.
Xiao: Whether yours or Liyue's, I hear all cries for help, all prayers for peace, and all the wishes carried by the lanterns.
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
After seeing the Traveler off, Xiao decides to move closer to Liyue Harbor in order to see the lanterns. The Traveler’s persistence eventually got to him and the innocent curiosity Xiao keeps buried deep in his heart emerged to the surface. For once, Xiao allowed himself to enjoy this beautiful sight of the human world.
Whether Xiao realised it or not, he unintentionally formed a bond with the Traveler. Initially a stranger whose presence Xiao could only tolerate due to having no previous attachment to, and therefore the feelings of being a burden did not apply, now became someone Xiao personally cares about. Moreover, the Traveler being an outsider of Teyvat, an alien unchained and detached from the happenings of this world, offers Xiao the freedom to be himself.
This accidental bond causes subsequent interactions between Xiao and the Traveler to show a change in his behaviour. Xiao’s facial expressions become softer, he starts adding “see you” before leaving because he hopes to see the Traveler again, and he speaks in a more relaxed manner. Even Shenhe comments on this change.
Shenhe: My first impression of him was that he's not one to smile. After meeting him again more recently, however, he's still as reserved as ever, but... he seems a lot more relaxed now. Maybe he... met someone special. (Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao even goes as far as putting himself in situations that make him uncomfortable, all for the sake of the Traveler and spending time with them.
Xiao: ...Idle chatter?
Xiao: ...If you wish, I'll accompany you.
Xiao: Generally, I don't partake in activities like "chatting."
Xiao: But if it's with you... I'll try.
(Teapot Lines)
Xiao: Fighting monsters is nothing new to me.
Xiao: If anything... It is these brief periods of leisure between battles that I'm not accustomed to.
Xiao: No matter. If you need to rest, I will stay here with you until you are ready.
(Imaginarium Theater)
Xiao: The parlor director went out of her way with the invitation, so it was difficult to turn her down. I had made mental preparations before agreeing to come.
Xiao: She told me that all the guests today would be "acquainted with elemental power," and I knew that you would be here. (Lantern Rite 3.4)
His bond with the Traveler encourages Xiao to make efforts to better understand and connect with another person, possibly for the first time, no matter how difficult it may be for him.
Xiao: This eternal dance of demon subjugation... My fight goes on. But I would like to know more about you.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao: If you have free time, we can go to Liyue Harbor together...
Xiao: I have no intention of getting close to the lives of mortals.
Xiao: But I know that you often enter and leave the city, walking amidst the crowd.
Xiao: The stories of these times, or their joys... If I don't experience such things myself, it'll be hard to understand your thoughts.
Traveler: So... you're doing this for me?
Xiao: Yes, to understand you.
(Teapot Lines)
During the Moonchase Festival, the Traveler calls Xiao for the first time. They value Xiao’s opinion and think he is a suitable taste-tester for Xiangling’s dishes. It’s also a way for the Traveler to include Xiao in a fun activity. Xiao, who has an aversion to mortal food, goes along with the Traveler’s request for their sake. He must have been happy that the Traveler remembered his promise and called him, even if it was for a mundane reason.
Traveler: We value your opinion, Xiao.
Xiao: ...
Xiao: Since it's you... I will do it.
(Moonchase Festival)
Time passes by and the Lantern Rite comes around once more. The Traveler visits Xiao along with Keqing who wants to offer him gifts on behalf of the Qixing. Xiao insists that gifts are wasted on him. He is simply fulfilling his duty so he does not need any rewards (he doesn’t believe he deserves them anyway) but his small smile suggests otherwise. He appreciates this act of thoughtfulness.
Xiao: Don't waste your delicacies on me.
Xiao: Eradicating demons is my duty. You don't have to thank me.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Not knowing how to deal with this situation of receiving gifts, Xiao attempts to leave by warning them of his harmful karma, telling them not to approach him so casually. Xiao’s concern is real and he truly wishes to protect them, but karma is also a convenient excuse he can fall back on when needed.
The Traveler invites Xiao to watch the fireworks together but he declines and chooses to continue his patrols instead. Before Xiao leaves, he reminds the Traveler to remain vigilant and if they are ever in danger to call his name.
Later on, the Traveler finds Xiao near Pervases’ temple. He makes no attempt at hiding his reasons for being here. Having finished his patrols, Xiao notes that demons have retreated and humans are safe. That was Pervases’ lifelong wish. This behaviour is in stark contrast to the first time the Traveler finds Xiao near the temple, showcasing how much he has opened up to them.
Xiao: Why are you here?
Traveler: Are you here to see Pervases as well?
Xiao: I was just passing through.
(The Trail of Pervases)
Xiao: You're here.
Xiao: The demons have retreated and the humans are safe and well. If Pervases knew... it would be a lifelong wish come true for him.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Xiao perceives that Traveler wishes to invite him again. Although he declines going to the city, he is no longer opposed to allowing himself to enjoy human festivities from a safe distance, so he later watches the fireworks from the Wangshu Inn’s rooftop.
Xiao: I trust you're not here to invite me to watch the fireworks in the city?
Traveler: Guilty as charged.
Xiao: I think I'll be fine right here.
Xiao: As long as the fireworks fly high enough, you can see them from wherever you are.
(Lantern Rite 2.4)
Slowly and without realizing it, Xiao found a new friend. He found a companion who brings him comfort, who earned his trust, and whom he came to cherish with all his heart.
Xiao: It's too late. The connection between us is too strong. Even if you wanted to, it's too late to sever it. (Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao: ...I don't know if it's related to you, but recently, the pain from my karmic debt has been less excruciating.
Xiao: It's much easier to bear than before.
(Teapot Lines)
Resting on this boat together with you, listening to the sound of the wind rustling through the lotus leaves... It calms my spirit.
So this is what mortals mean when they say to "kick back and relax." Hmm. It's a strange feeling... But having you here makes it feel less strange.
(Xiao Birthday Illustration 2025)
This is someone Xiao longs to protect, not merely out of duty, nor solely because of the innate goodness within him, but because he truly cares for them deeply.
Xiao: ...Please, go back and tell them to send Yelan instead.
Paimon: What!? Are we not good enough?
Xiao: I would feel more comfortable sending Yelan. She is privy to a secret art practiced by her clan, plus, she has extensive experience in battle. If anything was to happen to Traveler...
Paimon: Oh, so you're just worried for their safety.
Xiao: I fear the bad karma I carry would only disturb the border further. So, while I can show you to the entrance... I cannot venture inside with you.
(Lantern Rite 5.3)
Of course, I harbor no doubts about your martial ability, but if you rely solely on your skills and keep throwing yourself into harm's way, none can guarantee your safe return every time. There are still many people in this world who care about you... On second thought, persuasion isn't my forte. Just take this instead. It's a turquoise I infused with adeptal energies. I trust it will keep you safe.
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2025)
More than that, the Traveler is someone who, perhaps unbeknownst to Xiao, is slowly helping him open up to the world and connect with his own self. Through this special bond and Xiao’s desire to understand them, Xiao will eventually manage to find his way and become part of the world once more.
(Teapot Lines)
Xiao: ...There must be many different stories to tell of the hustle and bustle of the mortal world, too. You can tell me. I will listen.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
This chapter only covers characters that have had on-screen mentions of or interactions with Xiao. There is not enough information to properly study things that are only merely hinted.
● Verr Goldet
She is a secret agent of the Qixing and the current owner of the Wangshu Inn, which was established for the purpose of supporting Xiao in his fight against demons. She cares about him on a personal level and not purely due to her duty. She understands that he is used to being constantly on high alert so she doesn’t blame him when his battles cause destruction around the inn.
Verr Goldet: It doesn't help that all our guests seem to be the hypervigilant types too...
Verr Goldet: If there's the slightest disturbance, we end up with broken windows and doors, sometimes broken floorboards too.
Traveler: What is wrong with these people...
Verr Goldet: Oh come on, they're not that bad! They're just used to being in survival mode out in the wilderness. You can't blame them for being on high alert. (Guest from Afar)
Despite her care and understanding, however, she is unable to get close to him, so instead she often supports, assists and encourages the Traveler to do things for Xiao.
Verr Goldet: Oh, um... also...
Traveler: Also what?
Verr Goldet: If you're able to... ahem... could you... try to convince Xiao to go with you?
Verr Goldet: We're not close, I wouldn't know how to ask him myself. But it seems that you've grown familiar…
(Lantern Rite 1.3)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Huai’an
An agent of the Qixing and Verr Goldet’s husband. He is the innkeeper of the Wangshu Inn. He is often tasked with fixing things around the inn, broken by Xiao whenever fighting happens in the vicinity. Although Huai'an is often stressed out over these matters, he holds no grudge against the yaksha. He continues to dutifully make up all sorts of stories to hide Xiao’s presence at the inn. He also helps the Traveler to set up a mini-festival for Xiao during the first Lantern Rite.
Guest Message: "I sometimes catch a glimpse of a youth standing on the top floor, but I've never seen this person before around the inn. Could it be my imagination?"
Reply: Our inn is situated in the Dihua Marsh, a region of mist and mysticism. What's strange about seeing a good omen here? We thank guests for their understanding. (Wangshu Inn Bulletin Board)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Smiley Yanxiao
A chef who works at the Wangshu Inn. He has trouble cooking dishes for Xiao, not knowing what kind of food he can make for the yaksha. Nevertheless, Yanxiao continues to do his best at taking care of Xiao, even looking for alternative dishes he might like. Xiao seems to appreciate him.
Smiley Yanxiao: The boss requested that I look after him more, but he lives a very austere lifestyle, which makes it quite tricky to attend to his needs. Besides Almond Tofu, he doesn't have any other preferences.
Smiley Yanxiao: I heard the boss say that you once made a Satisfying Salad for him, and he quite liked it. Can you... teach me how to make that dish? I'd like to prepare it for him.
Paimon: Oh, so this is for Xiao! You guys really look after him, huh.
Smiley Yanxiao: Well, that's life, right? You've gotta look out for your own people.
Xiao: You excel in the culinary arts. I'm reminded of another chef I know.
Xiao: That chef cooks dishes with soul, as do you. Both of you are masters of your craft.
Paimon: Who do you think he means? Smiley Yanxiao?
Traveler: It has to be Yanxiao!
(Moonchase Festival)

● Wang Ping’an
A normal human who was fascinated by tales of the Adepti that he heard from his grandfather. After his grandfather’s passing, Wang Ping’an found a Sigil of Permission in his belongings and started cosplaying as an Adeptus called Starsnatcher. Initially it was for fun, but later he became warped by greed. He learns the errors of his ways in Alatus Chapter: Act I and makes an oath in front of Xiao to become a better person.
Starsnatcher: Oh Great Conqueror of Demons, please allow me to swear this oath before you...
Starsnatcher: I swear to turn away from the evil, to live an honest life, and to never again stain from the name of the Adepti!
Xiao: I will remember your oath... Now go.
(Xiao Story Quest)
He later takes it upon himself to repair the crumbled and abandoned temple that once honored Pervases. Currently, he is in the process of writing a book about Xiao.
Wang Ping'an: Apart from that guidebook, I'm currently planning to write a book about the Vigilant Yaksha.
Wang Ping'an: Its purpose, of course, is to share the stories of the Vigilant Yaksha with as many people as possible.
Wang Ping'an: That way, I'll be able to put the folklore knowledge I possess to good use.
(The Trail of Pervases)

● Moon Carver, Mountain Shaper, Streetward Rambler and other Adepti
Currently, there is not a lot of information available regarding Xiao’s relationship with other Adepti but they seem to be on good terms. As Adepti loyal to Rex Lapis, they fought alongside each other during the Archon War and they have likely worked together to protect Liyue. An example of this is seen during Archon Quest Chapter I: Act III.
Some Adepti of the past loved gatherings and would call up others for chats and drinks. Xiao would often get dragged along to join them, suggesting they had a favorable opinion of him.
Xiao: There were those among the Adepti who loved gatherings and idle chit chat. Sometimes, they would call up a few others for a drink. Even I got dragged along to their gatherings, many times.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
As for the Adepti who are still alive, they seem to care about Xiao, but perhaps they are uncertain of how to approach him or they simply respect his desire for solitude.
Streetward Rambler: By honoring his oath as a yaksha, one hopes that our fellow adeptus has now finally gained some respite from the grievances that have burdened him all these millennia.
(Xiao Character Introduction)
At one point, after heeding the advice given to him by the Traveler and later by Zhongli, Xiao decides to visit the Adepti, revealing that he considers them his old friends.
I paid a visit to Moon Carver today. He was immediately alarmed and asked me if something important happened. ...I was simply following your advice and met up with an old friend I haven't seen in a while.
As you know, I'm not the sociable type, so it took quite some explaining before I managed to clear his suspicion. I wasn't prepared to hear him say that... "Since you're here, why don't we ask Cloud Retainer to host a little get-together?"
(Xiao Birthday Mail 2023)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Cloud Retainer / Xianyun
She is an Adeptus who has recently moved to Liyue Harbor and dons the disguise of a mortal named Xianyun. Xiao has fought alongside Cloud Retainer on many occasions during the Archon War so they share a sense of camaraderie. Xiao seems to think very highly of her skill in both Adeptal sigils and mechanics alike.
Xiao: Even so, Cloud Retainer was not always as ostentatious as you describe. You may be unaware, but her talent with Adepti sigils is just as formidable as her skill in mechanics.
(Xianyun Story Quest)
On her part, Cloud Retainer cares about Xiao, but she, like the other Adepti, respects his desire for solitude so she doesn't approach him. However, she is happy to see him when he visits the Adepti during his birthday. Cloud Retainer also expresses her desire to cook dishes for him and is even aware of his particular tastes for mild flavors.
Xianyun: The Conqueror of Demons is even more withdrawn than oneself — he has been sighted a mere handful of times at social gatherings over the centuries... One was interested to learn that you are on rather good terms with him — what sort of conversations do the two of you tend to have? Oh, and do let me know when you next plan to see him. Perhaps one could make some tofu pudding for you to pass on to him.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Cloud Retainer’s above conversation with the Traveler may imply that she wishes to learn what kind of conversations they have with him so that she could better converse and communicate with Xiao.
◇ ◇ ◇
● Ganyu
She is a fellow Adeptus that has participated in the Archon War. Ganyu is very empathetic towards Xiao, but she feels incapable of getting close to him. Meanwhile, Xiao believes he is not a suitable person to be around Ganyu so the two of them stay away from each other.
Ganyu: He has always kept his distance from the human world, I should say it is because of his personality... I can understand him, but I can't "approach" him. After all... the companions who fulfilled the same "contract" with him are no longer here…
(Profile Voice-Over)
Nevertheless, Xiao has helped her out before. When Ganyu was feeling lost, he prepared trials to help her train. Despite his strict words, Xiao turned out to be a good mentor for her who understood her inner conflict.
Xiao: You're neither an adeptus, nor a human, always treading the line between the two worlds. It must create a lot of confusion.
Xiao: Instead of explaining yourself to me, you should face your true self.
Ganyu: I... I have nothing to hide.
Traveler: It seems that Xiao understands Ganyu quite well.
(Ganyu Story Quest)
Unfortunately, Xiao doesn’t believe that he is a good mentor so he continues to keep his distance.

● Yanfei
She is a half-Illuminated Beast and a half-human who is currently working as a legal adviser in Liyue Harbor. Although Yanfei is not concerned about her Adeptal ancestry, she is close to Madame Ping, therefore she must have heard many tales about the Conqueror of Demons in her life because she recognizes Xiao immediately during Perilous Trail.
Once it is revealed that Xiao is in danger, Yanfei becomes greatly concerned about his safety. She spends her time analyzing the Chasm space and thinking of a way to reach Xiao. Eventually, together with the Traveler, she finds a way to regroup with him. Throughout the events of Perilous Trail, Yanfei is shown to continually be understanding and considerate of Xiao’s circumstances and feelings, whether he is present or not.
Xiao: It's just a flesh wound. I am fine. I shouldn't let myself be a burden to you.
Yanfei: You're not a burden. Don't think that for one second. We need you, all of us. For our sake, please, stay here. Please?
Yanfei: By the way, um... You and Xiao seem pretty close, huh? Yelan got a bit worked up just now, so I just wanted to apologize on her behalf.
Paimon: Xiao, she's criticizing you.
Yanfei: Am not!
(Perilous Trail)
However, she vehemently refuses to go along with Xiao’s plan of self-sacrifice because she truly wants him to survive. And she feels a great sense of relief when Xiao does manage to escape in the end.
Yanfei: That was close! I thought you were gonna get left behind... I'm so glad you're okay, that was terrifying…
(Perilous Trail)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Arataki Itto & Ushi
He is an oni from Inazuma. He finds himself trapped in the depths of the Chasm together with the Traveler and other characters during Perilous Trail. Although he doesn’t get to interact with Xiao that much, Itto takes a liking to him immediately and tries to help him when he learns that the yaksha is in danger.
Arataki Itto: Is that little dude called Xiao down there? We gotta help him!
(Perilous Trail)
Ushi is Itto’s companion. During Perilous Trail, Ushi listens to the conversation between Xiao and the other characters and at the end he asks Itto to pass on his humble advice, hoping that it could help Xiao live a happier life in the future. Paimon later delivers the message to Xiao.
Paimon: Oh, yeah! Ushi wanted us to tell you. It's very important.
Paimon: Ushi said he has the power to exorcise demons, so people use him to fend them off. But after he met Itto, he's never left his side.
Paimon: He also said that he doesn't have any grand philosophies, he just thinks we should spend our lives around the people who make us happiest.
Paimon: Maybe there aren't so many rules about how we should or shouldn't live our lives in this world after all. So... he hopes you can come to understand that even though the power of a yaksha may be harmful to other people, it doesn't mean you shouldn't hang out with them.
(Perilous Trail)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Yelan
She is a secretive intelligence agent who works under Ningguang. Yelan comes from a clan of thaumaturges and she has heard a lot of stories about the Vigilant Yaksha from the elders, but the first time she meets Xiao in person is during Perilous Trail.
When Xiao makes a plan to sacrifice himself in order to help everyone escape the chaotic space they are trapped in, Yelan vehemently disagrees with him. In the past Yelan lost her own companions and she was rescued by someone else’s sacrifice, so she wants to prevent this from happening again. Yelan is also able to see past Xiao’s words and demeanor. She understands that he is not as ruthless as he presents himself to be, that he is gentle and that deep down he probably wants to live.
Yelan: Besides, if you were really so determined to end it all, you wouldn't have given us the opportunity to share our opinions. You are not as ruthless as you think you are.
(Perilous Trail)
Though the two of them never reach an agreement, they work together for the benefit of the entire group. Alas, things don’t work out in the group’s favor. When Xiao is about to sacrifice himself at the very end, Yelan desperately attempts to reach out to him. But it is too late.
Still, at the very end Xiao is rescued by Zhongli and joins everyone on the surface. Yelan is no doubt relieved, and decides to put their arguments and differences aside to thank him.
Yelan: I don't think we were ever going to reach an agreement over the final strategy. But in the end, it was thanks to you that we managed to escape. So thank you for saving us all.
(Perilous Trail)
But Xiao admits he could not have done this all by himself, acknowledging Yelan’s contribution. And later, when he has a private talk with the Traveler he admits that Yelan was right in everything she said. Though Yelan herself seems to believe that it really was Xiao who made the highest contribution.
Yanfei: Maybe Yelan really doesn't believe she made a contribution. It seems like she's convinced Xiao saved us all... including her, and she doesn't know what to say to that.
(Perilous Trail)
So although the two of them continued to disagree on various matters, they gained mutual respect for each other. Not one of titles or past deeds, but genuine respect for who they are. This is best seen in Lantern Rite 5.3 when Xiao and Yelan are willing to work together again. After the events pass, the two of them spend the evening together. Yelan is shown to feel comfortable making a little joke.
Yelan: If you're not happy about it, why don't you file a complaint at Yujing Terrace?
Xiao: Hmph... and report the Tianquan to the Tianquan?
Yelan: Actually, I was thinking the Yuheng. She's not afraid of a confrontation.
(Lantern Rite 5.3)
Meanwhile, Xiao feels comfortable to let his guard down, even if a little, and express his more personal thoughts, with which Yelan fully agrees.
Yelan: Heh. Wangshu Inn is a fine location...
(Xiao teleports beside her.)
Xiao: All of Liyue is a fine location.
Yelan: Haha, well said.
(Lantern Rite 5.3)
So the two end up dining together.
Yelan: Boss, another serving of Dew-Dipped Shrimp please, with some dipping spices.
Xiao: ...
(Yelan gives a bemused look in Xiao's direction before turning to address the entrance once more.)
Yelan: ...And one Almond Tofu.
(Lantern Rite 5.3)

● Xiangling
She is a young chef who works at the Wanmin Restaurant which is owned by her father. She meets Xiao for the first time during the Moonchase Festival when the Traveler summons him to ask for his help. Xiangling immediately considers Xiao as one of her customers, something that likely moved Xiao.
Xiangling: I've made it into the finals of this year's Masterful Chefs, and I'm testing some dishes out in preparation. I'm trying to get feedback from customers with all different tastes.
Xiao: Customers... and that includes me?
Xiangling: Uh-huh! The Traveler says you prefer mild food — just the kind of person I'm looking for. If you don't mind, I'd like you to try the dishes I've made and tell me your thoughts.
(Moonchase Festival)
She asks for his opinion on her newest dishes, as she’s looking for feedback from different people with different tastes. Xiao agrees to help, though it is for the Traveler’s sake.
They meet again two Lantern Rites later at Hu Tao’s banquet. After Xiao and the Traveler leave the room to get some fresh air, Xiangling goes after them worried that Xiao has been restless and unable to enjoy the food, and is perhaps planning to return to the Wangshu Inn.
Xiangling: To be honest, I was kinda worried too.
Xiangling: You looked a little restless just now, and I thought you weren't used to the food here and was planning to head back to Wangshu Inn for something Yanxiao made.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
She then presents him with a few servings of Almond Tofu, specially prepared for him. It turns out that she learned about Xiao’s preferences from Smiley Yanxiao and she knew about Hu Tao’s guests beforehand, so she prepared Almond Tofu for Xiao as a token of gratitude for his previous support.
◇ ◇ ◇
● Chongyun
He is a young exorcist from a family with a history of working in close collaboration with the Vigilant Yaksha for many generations, dispelling evil together. He has the utmost respect for Xiao and looks up to him, though he is also disappointed that Xiao doesn’t seem to acknowledge the importance of exorcists. Even so, Chongyun feels a great honor to finally meet Xiao in person during Hu Tao’s banquet.
Chongyun: Hard to imagine that thanks to Hu Tao, I've finally gotten the chance to meet him... Conqueror of Demons, I am honored to make your acquaintance. (Lantern Rite 3.4)
Chongyun always talks to Xiao respectfully, referring to him by his titles, even when Xiao has mentioned multiple times that formalities are not needed. Chongyun’s respect extends as far as not wishing to inconvenience the yaksha with personal matters, though he has expressed his desire to learn and study under Xiao.
Chongyun: I, um... aw, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to drag even the Conqueror of Demons into this...
Chongyun: I would also be honored if you joined us, Adeptus Xiao. It is a rare opportunity, and... I have many questions about exorcising evil spirits that I would like to ask you. (Waterborne Poetry)
On his part, Xiao believes Chongyun’s unique constitution is a blessing that should be treasured and it far surpasses any techniques passed down by thaumaturges through generations.
Xiao: Your physical constitution is far rarer than the techniques still passed down by exorcists today. You should treasure it.
(Waterborne Poetry)

● Hu Tao
She is the 77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. The parlor has a long history with the Guardian Yakshas. While the yakshas vanquished demons that plagued the land, the funeral parlor was responsible for purifying the diseased and sending off the spirits of the dead. This deep-rooted connection motivated Hu Tao to invite Xiao to her Lantern Rite banquet, although it is unclear if that was her sole motive and purpose for inviting him.
Hu Tao: But despite our deep-rooted connection, it still took me quite a while to actually convince him.
Traveler: Was he worried about his karma?
Hu Tao: You know him pretty well, huh?
Xiao: This matter is out of my control, so I need to be cautious.
Hu Tao: True, but I've kept that in mind too! That's why everyone here today is in one way or another acquainted with elemental power.
Hu Tao: Besides, it'll only be for a short while as we dine together. There won't be any lasting consequences.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Xiao rejected the invitation at first, but Hu Tao was persistent and she went out of her way to accommodate the yaksha, making sure all participants were acquainted with elemental power so that there would be no trouble. She was also considerate of him and looked after him when she sensed his discomfort.
Zhongli: The director didn't mention anything when she invited us. What a pleasant surprise... Gathered here with us tonight are not only young and accomplished individuals, but also the protector of Liyue's peace, Adeptus Alatus.
Zhongli: To convene here with all of you is indeed a great honor.
Xiao: I'm sure you're exaggerating, Zhong— Ahem, Sir.
Hu Tao: Ugh, there he goes again! Enough with the pleasantries. Go let our guest take a seat.
Xiao: This matter is out of my control, so I need to be cautious.
Hu Tao: True, but I've kept that in mind too! That's why everyone here today is in one way or another acquainted with elemental power. (Lantern Rite 3.4)
She later tries to invite him to a poetry event she has organized with Venti. He rejects the invitation, but she encourages him to participate even if he lacks knowledge of poetry. She also goes as far as preparing a special poem for Xiao’s appearance, although that never comes to pass.
Xiao: Never having penned a verse myself, how could I hope to judge the poetry of others? Besides, afflicted with karma as I am, the raucous atmosphere you are cultivating is precisely the kind which I must avoid, as you well know.
Hu Tao: Hey now, there's a first time for everything, right? We all start from "itsy-bitsy spider," but give it a shot and you'll be wandering lonely as a cloud in no time! (Waterborne Poetry)
She also goes as far as preparing a special poem for Xiao’s appearance, although he doesn’t join the event in the end.
Hu Tao: We couldn't cajole Adeptus Xiao in the end. He said he'd take a peek from the peaks, but that was all he'd agree to. It's a real shame — I had the perfect poem for his entrance and everything.
(Waterborne Poetry)
Although Xiao has trouble dealing with Hu Tao’s high energy, he seems to find her sense of humor amusing. And over time he becomes more willing to interact with her.
Xiao: Hu Tao? That child is so lively it's headache-inducing. Fortunately, she’s rather amusing, so there’s no need to worry about her growing into a boring human. (Profile Voice-Over)
Xiao: A ghostly kite? Could that elusive Director Hu be coming to Wangshu Inn once again?
Xiao: I wonder what business she has this time. I suppose it matters not. Given her relationship with Rex... Well, Zhongli, I might as well go and greet her. (Lantern Rite 4.4)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Qiqi
She is a jiangshi and a casualty of the battle between demons and Adepti. Currently, she helps Dr.Baizhu of the Bubu Pharmacy with gathering herbs and taking care of patients.
One day, Qiqi found Xiao unconscious in Dihua Marsh and she carried him all the way to Liyue Harbor so he could receive treatment. Xiao left immediately after waking up and that marked the end of their interactions.
However, it is possible that this was not their first meeting. Xiao may have been one of the Adepti responsible for Qiqi’s death and also one of Adepti that tried to resurrect her. Qiqi’s comments on Xiao imply that they might have met in the past.
Qiqi: Remind me, have I met him before?
(Profile Voice-Over)
This experience would further explain Xiao’s immediate reaction upon meeting the Traveler for the first time. He saw for himself what happened to Qiqi after she was imbued with Adeptal energy — she went berserk.
The Adepti could not bear to let her die, and each imparted to her a portion of their strength, meaning to breathe life back into her body. Qiqi did indeed awaken and live again, but went into a berserk state, unable to control the Adepti energy raging through her.
(Character Story)
Xiao: Mortal souls are not as resilient as those of Adepti, and their blood can't bear such a concentration of Adeptal energy.
Xiao: It's for your own good, hurry up and leave.
(Of the Land Amidst Monoliths)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Baizhu & Changsheng
He is a renowned doctor and the owner of the Bubu Pharmacy. Baizhu has a great deal of respect for and is incredibly polite towards the Vigilant Yaksha.
Baizhu: Only the most magnanimous soul could labor to preserve life by slaying evil spirits.
(Profile Voice-Over)
Baizhu: ...The Lantern Rite when we met briefly, I was unaware of your true identity. I... must apologize for the discourtesy.
(Baizhu Story Quest)
Baizhu met Xiao for the first time when Qiqi brought the unconscious yaksha to the Bubu Pharmacy for treatment. Baizhu took care of Xiao but at the time he was not aware of Xiao’s identity and the latter left before the two of them could exchange words.
They later meet again when the Traveler summons Xiao to inquire about dead gods that might be buried beneath Qingce Village. Xiao takes notice of Changsheng, indicating that he is aware of her and who she might be, but he remains quiet. Before leaving, however, he gives Baizhu some advice.
Xiao: I do not wish to sway decisions that are mortals' to make, but...
Xiao: ...Immortality may not be the blessing that you imagine it to be.
Baizhu: ...I shall treasure your words of instruction, Master Adeptus.
(Baizhu Story Quest)
◇ ◇ ◇
● Venti
He is Barbatos, the Anemo Archon, but in current times he goes by the name of Venti the Bard. There was a time in the far past when Xiao almost succumbed to darkness, but he was rescued by the sound of a magical flute. It was, of course, the flute played by Venti.
They meet again when the Lantern Rite approaches and Venti attempts to interact and befriend Xiao, but he is not very successful. The tormented yaksha only wishes to rest alone. Even if that was not so, Xiao wouldn’t know how to handle interacting with someone as free-spirited as Venti. That said, Venti helps Xiao once more by playing the flute to ease the yaksha’s pain.
Xiao: I was patrolling Dihua Marsh a few days ago when I happened to run into this... this...
Venti: Hm? You've already forgotten? I'm a bard, remember?
Xiao: Oh, right, and this bard was performing in Dihua Marsh.
Xiao: It was a... moving melody, and it made me feel relaxed and at ease. I... couldn't help but stay and listen.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Venti attempts to befriend Xiao again during Hu Tao’s banquet. Unfortunately for him, Xiao is not good at reading social cues and has not quite realized yet that it is possible for him to be friends with an Archon of all people, so their interactions don’t get too far.
Zhongli: Ahem... Could this new guest be Master Xingqiu's friend?
Traveler: He's my old pal too.
Venti: Yeah! Xiao, you remember me too, right? We had a chat not long ago.
Xiao: ...Yes, yes.
(Lantern Rite 3.4)
Venti does not give up, however. When he organizes a poetry gala together with Hu Tao, he invites Xiao to participate, and this time he has come to learn how to use the Traveler as an incentive.
Venti: We came here hoping to invite a special guest...
Xiao: ...I already told you. I'm not going.
Venti: Besides, with the renowned Traveler here, what is there to fear?
Traveler: Join us. It'll be fun.
Xiao: ...
Xiao: I'll consider it.
(Waterborne Poetry)
