The Xenomorph variant introduced in the 2017 film Alien: Covenant had been commonly dubbed the "Protomorph" by the fanbase both prior to as well as following the release of the film, and there is some debate over whether it should actually be called as such. Official action figures commonly refer to the creature as simply "Xenomorph" with no distinction from other Xenomorph variants, and the Protomorph had also been dubbed the "Goran Xenomorph" by the Minimates line of action figures in honor of the actor portraying it. The 2019 tabletop game Alien: The Roleplaying Game suggested the name of this Xenomorph variant as "Praetomorph", and although this name was inspired by the term Protomorph, it ultimately failed to compete with the latter in terms of acceptance among fans and the name Protomorph is now firmly established as the common name of the Covenant Xenomorph, and official social media and crew members behind the film even picked up and affirmed the name Protomorph. Noting that the fan-website Studio Yutani posted an official image of the Deacon Alien and the traditional Acheron Alien while stating "FYI the Deacon is the Protomorph". This statement is false because the name given the Deacon in the image is "Proto-Xenomorph", not Protomorph, and even this name didn't stick as it was replaced with "Deacon".
