Assignment 4
Juan Day, Isang Araw: An Interactive Learning Resource for Combating Misinformation in Digital Media
Fake news is a serious problem in society because it harms people, weakens public trust, and damages confidence in institutions. With just a single click, false information can spread instantly across social media. Many individuals suffer from depression and online bullying due to misinformation (Starvaggi et al., 2024), while reputations are destroyed and trust is lost because of malinformation.
Social media plays a major role in spreading misinformation, but the responsibility lies with its users. Many people are influenced by fake news in politics, society, and even within families. The University of Michigan Library (n.d.) explains that fake news is often fabricated and based on unverifiable sources or quotes, yet many people still fall victim to persuasive videos and text messages.
In response to these challenges, this open educational resource (OER) is designed to engage students and the wider community in the process of identifying and evaluating fake news, as well as to share this knowledge with others.
As students at the University of the Philippines Open University, we have the capacity to study, learn, and lead by example. It begins with us, but the campaign can extend beyond the university to children, adults, and the general public. By becoming fully aware of how to use social media responsibly, fewer people will fall victim to scams, bullying, or identity theft. Through spreading awareness, we can empower everyone to think critically, protect themselves online, and contribute to a more informed and resilient society.
