Assignment 3
Part 1: Digital Map
My digital map reflects a clear distinction between my goal-oriented tasks and my identity-driven online presence. On the Visitor side, I have tools like Google Search and MyPortal. I treat these as functional utilities—I log in with a specific intent, such as finding a fact or downloading a course guide, and leave as soon as the task is complete without leaving a social trace.
However, my map shifts heavily toward the Resident pole when it comes to my professional and creative life. Because of my background in multimedia and design, platforms like Affinity and Canva are more than just tools; they are spaces where I "live" and collaborate. My presence there is visible to others, and I spend significant time cultivating a digital identity through the projects I build.
Similarly, my social and personal interests, ranging from music discovery on Spotify to engaging with online communities, fall into the Personal-Resident quadrant. I am a resident in these spaces because I contribute to the environment and maintain a continuous presence. By mapping these out, it becomes evident that while I am a "Resident" in creative and social spheres, I remain a "Visitor" within the university’s current digital environment, suggesting that MyPortal could benefit from features that encourage more "Resident" style engagement and community.
Part 2: Features I wish to see
1. The "Recent Activity" Dashboard (Inspired by Design Software)
The Feature: A "Continue Where You Left Off" on the landing page.
The Reason: Professional design tools always show your most recent projects immediately upon opening. MyPortal should display the specific module or PDF I last viewed rather than just the recently accessed courses. As a student handling multiple subjects, this would eliminate the need to "dig" through folders every time I log in, saving time and maintaining my flow.
The Feature: A toggle for "Dark Mode" and the ability to customize layout density (e.g., Compact vs. Cozy view).
The Reason: As someone focused on graphic design, I spend long hours staring at screens. Most professional tools offer Dark Mode to reduce eye strain. MyPortal’s current interface is very bright; adding these UI options would make the portal a more comfortable "Resident" space for students who study late into the night.
The Feature: A built-in, real-time "Online Study Lounge" where you can see which classmates are currently active in a module.
The Reason: Most "Resident" behavior currently happens on external apps because MyPortal feels static. If the portal integrated a seamless way to see who is online—similar to the "live cursors" in a collaborative Google Docs file—it would transform the site into a living, breathing digital campus. For instance, knowing that a classmate is taking a quiz at the same time or reading the same course module as me creates a sense of shared effort and community. This reduces the isolation of online learning and allows for spontaneous peer-to-peer support without leaving the institutional environment.
