Sometimes I like to take on film watching projects or challenges as a way to expand my experience as a movie fan. Like one time I found a challenge online with a checklist of things like "a movie from the year you were born", "a film by a non-white director" and "a film based on a book". Another time I did a checklist of directors, but I could choose which of their movies to watch.

I once challenged myself to watch a film from every year dating back to the first feature in 1911. Currently I'm doing a similar challenge to watch an animated film from every year that one exists, though unlike the other challenges, this time I'm allowing myself to watch other films while I leisurely pursue this goal. I'm excluding Japanese films because I plan to do a similar challenge dedicated to anime in the future.

I find that doing these things keeps me from getting into a rut and helps me to fully round my knowledge of film. Does anyone else do this kind of thing? What ways do you challenge yourselves as film viewers?

If you have any ideas about things to add to the challenge or change about it, please tell me. I shall be creating badges for the challenge, for different levels of completion. I will attempt the challenge myself. Feel free to share the progress in the design process and mission. Have fun with the challenge and good luck !

I hope you have as much fun doing the challenge as I am at the moment. Please tell me if you're participating, that way I can know and we can make the challenge more visible, creating more activity, so more fun ! Again, if you have any suggestions about things to modify or add to the challenge, I would be glad to hear. Don't hesitate about regularly posting about your progress, I'm keen on seeing how you're all doing. Good luck !

Hi @Mopoii, I am keen to do this challenge. I am just finishing up my submission for @Death Engineerings Konstellation Space Program, so will have a prebuilt Ares 1 and Ares V to use. My Orion has 6 seats, so I will upgrade that to 7 seats.

Although it is isn't a requirement for the challenge, I have included an additional launch of the Duna Global Surveyor, which is launched on a Delta II rocket prior to the Pathfinder launch, and arrives at Duna prior to the Pathfinder probe, burning into a highly elliptical polar orbit. The DGS acts as a relay to allow near continuous communication with Pathfinder and Sojourner.

I've been doing more work on completing the challenge, so here is the showcase of my Ares I, along with the Orion capsule and service module. I tried to make it as close as I could to what it would have been, with a reasonable part count (even though it's all the way up to 200!) and stock-only parts.

The challenge was lack of time. That was I feel particularly due to postal / logistical issue across the globe at present. That said, there is a certain discipline in having to use a roll of film in a given amount of time.

The best way to cover such a comprehensive list would be to sort them into 30-day nightly session clusters, otherwise the brain gets fried and the story is missed. Strap in, ladies and gentlemen, and allow me to walk you through my first 30-day movie challenge, comprising of one film per evening, in no specific order.

Here are a few shots from my first roll on the $20 camera challenge. It was interesting that by shooting with a point and shoot camera with very limited settings to worry about, I felt like I could just focus on being creative and not worrying about metering and all the details. It was a fun experiment.

My husband and I were in a local Catholic book store and came across the title Movies that Matter written by a Jesuit. it is a series of film critiques on different modern movies through a Catholic lens. He is very interested in the book and wanted to take it home immediately, but a few of the movies in there seemed a little oddly chosen. so, first I wanted to contact you to see if you were familiar with the book and could give any guiding pointers on it.

I wanted to let you know that I use your critiques as the major source of info for our family viewing. I know that if you have recommended it, the film will be good. I especially rely on your critiques of adult films, and have found all of your reviews right on target. Unfortunately, not all movies are available in our local rental shop. Just wanted to offer some encouragement after reading your article. :) Thanks you for the work you do. May God strengthen you.

With Halloween a few months away, many in the Letterboxd community, especially Horrorville members, are now busy preparing for the holiday by creating and sharing their lists. Some are also counting down the days with various types of challenges, including the below:

Okay Juicers, so I am doing this 30 day Film Challenge that should really give my thoughts and emotions an interesting time during the next month of quarantine. We have made it to the final day of our challenge and what a journey it has been. This has made me think hard about what different movies can bring you and I loved it. What better way to finish this off than with the question what movie has my favorite ending. The only answer for me is arguably the greatest movie of all time and that is The Shawshank Redemption.

When you talk about Shawshank you are talking about one of the standard bearers of cinema. A movie that we compare all movies to because of its greatness. That reputation has been built over a long time of this movie just being on, and being impossible to turn off. Once Shawshank is on the screen your life is on hold for however long the rest of the movie is. Afterwards you are always emotionally drained because of the spectacle you just watched.

When they final 25 minutes hit though there really is nothing like it in movies. That first time you see the rock go through the poster and realize what is happening, it is a shocking experience. And then that Morgan Freeman narration continues and man it is just everything you want it to be and more. And it only works because of the performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. They are incredible together and both are giving performances of a lifetime. Freeman as he is the wise but always growing veteran, and Robbins who comes in as the newbie but leaves in Reds words as the hardest screw to ever walk through Shawshank Prison. 589ccfa754
