I made a storyboard to visualize my level concept. By doing this, I discovered how I want to connect all the events and areas in my environment.
This worked really well, as I could easily create a blockout based on my storyboard.
As for the blockout, I only wanted to create the space where I could work in as a base. I didn't want to spend any unnecessary time on 3D modeling or creating the exact composition because I was planning to create a modular asset pack for this assignment.
This asset pack would provide me from enough assets and variety to create a good-looking and thoughtful environment design once the space was set up in Unity.
During this process, I frequently asked feedback from my peers which gave me plenty of insights to enhance my design.
Here you can see the breakdown of my environment design. It was a challenge for me to create a flow that didn't feel too linear, as there's actually only one path to take. By adding obstacles and a few spots that were harder to reach, I think I managed to make it feel a bit less linear.
The obstacles will involve: mining crystals, interacting with rocks and looking for clues. I'll cover this more thoroughly in Phase 3.
At the and of the walkthrough, there's a shrine which hides a puzzle (your main objective). After completing this puzzle, a gateway to the next level will appear.
I designed a simple puzzle for the last area in my level. Here's a quick explanation:
The main components are
• 3 pedestals with colored crystals (red, green, yellow)
• Rotatable wheels on each pedestal
• 6 half shaped panels in the center with chipped colored crystals (red, green, yellow)
• Time pressure (poisonous mist, particle effect)
Once the player arrives at the puzzle, they only have one chance to complete it due to time pressure of the poisonous mist. (The player is familiar with the poisonous mist, as the chasms of the excavation site are filled with it)
Each wheel triggers two panels to turn into an unpredictable direction. The order of turning which wheel (according to color) is essential to complete the puzzle within time.
• Your goal is to align two same-colored panels on the angle of the same-colored pedestal.
The player can find out which order is right by remembering the order in which they saw the corresponding colors throughout the level. Turning the wheel in this order will complete the puzzle, otherwise they will fail.
Here are two action shots of the puzzle with animations. The right order in which the player encounters the colors are: green, yellow and lastly red.
After the puzzle is solved and the spell is broken, a gateway beneath the panels opens up in which the player can travel through.
