The moods of the environments in Darksiders helped me to visualize my own goal for KM3. I happened to love and make stylized art, so it was interesting to see how other games approach an environment with
less-detailed assets (compared to realistic art).
I used this game as a reference for my gameplay. The visual steering and dialogue the game uses were very helpful for me. The environments are extremely well made and one video particularly proved me very helpful, which I'll link here:

In this game I researched how environments affected by 'Red Lyrium' are used to guide players through a level. Although these crystals are malignant, at the same time they point towards destinations.
Besides the Red Lyrium, this game also has incredibly well designed levels that inspired me to build the Excavation Site of my KM3. Especially the lightning, object placing and fantasy themed style is translated beautifully.

Before creating a big project, I always like to make some designs of a few objects that will be available in the game universe. This helps me to get a better idea of what kind of shapes, materials, colors, textures, motifs and general feel or theme the environments needs to convey.
Sometimes it's just too hard to visualize the bigger picture without knowing where to start, so this is where I started.
This boar statue is made out of rock and crystal. Initially, I meant to create this asset to support my puzzle. The boar was supposed to leak poisonous mist out of its mouth in the final area. Unfortunately, I didn't make it in time to finish it, but it helped me to get an idea of what the general environment needs to look like! I used the same materials and shapes in my environment because of this design.
This is a panel design I used for my puzzle. It can split into two halves and has an extravagant braided design. By making this, I made sure I could use that braided pattern for other mechanisms as well. This could also be used as a visual steering tool, since the pattern is quite noticeable for the player.
