Dietary Intervention Mitigates Metabolic Toxicity from Organochlorine Pesticide Exposure — Published in Journal of Hazardous Materials (IF:11.3)
Our research team, led by Prof. Dong Young Rhyu, has published a new study demonstrating that intermittent calorie restriction (ICR) can alleviate metabolic toxicity induced by organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), a persistent class of environmental pollutants known to accumulate in adipose tissue and elevate the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Following 12 weeks of OCP mixture exposure, animals maintained on a high-fat diet developed hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and impaired pancreatic function. In contrast, animals under intermittent calorie restriction showed improved glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity, reduced hepatic fat accumulation and inflammation, and better-preserved liver and pancreatic tissue integrity.
The findings suggest that dietary management may serve as an effective strategy for reducing the health impact of unavoidable environmental pollutant exposure, offering scientific groundwork for lifestyle-based approaches to chronic disease prevention.
This work was supported by the Ministry of Environment's Environmental Health Action Program and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and was co-first-authored by Dr. Laxmi Sen Thakuri (Mokpo National University) and Dr. Cheol-min Park (National Honam Biological Resources Center).
