Virtual Courses followed by an outdooor experience putting the skills learned to the test.
Virtual Courses:
4 virtual courses covering the basics in survival topics
Land Navigation/Outdoor Communication - Main Topics: What to do when you’re lost, how to use a compass.
Shelter/Knots - Main Topics: Learn how to build a shelter using minimal materials, or found in nature. Learn key knots required for field craft/bush craft projects
Meal Preparation - Main Topics: Prepare a meal over an open fire. Plant identification, food safety in the outdoor environment
Fire Safety/ Water Purification - Main Topics: Lite a fire with minimal tools (Magnesium Bar/Ferro Rod, Steel), How to purify water with the fire that was built.
Outdoor Experience:
After the 4 virtual classes students will have the opportunity to attend a day in the field where they put the skills learned during the virtual classes to the test. Children will be in groups of 5-10 and supervised by a Back On Azimuth volunteer.
Building on the concept in the 101 (2hr virtual class is a pre-req to attend/participate these classes)
Orienteering
Topics covered: How to read a map, How to use a compass (review), How to combine a map and compass to know where you are. How to find a point using the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). Students
Shelter/knots
Topics covered: Build a shelter outdoors and other bush craft tools. Build traps and snares to assist in food procurement.
Meal Preparation
Topics covered: Food safety, how to prepare food in a field environment, plant identification, Cooking over an open fire, Discuss other camping/outdoor food prep options.
Prepare for the unkown
Topics covered: How to plan for an outdoor excursion. What should you bring? How do you organize your pack effeciently. Students will go through planning and packing a 1 day and 3 day pack.
