Campus 1: Carrick Road - Boyle Convent Primary (formerly Scoil na nAingeal Naofa)
Boyle Convent Primary School was opened by the Sisters of Mercy in Abbeytown, in 1875. The school moved to its campus on the Carrick Road in 1965, where it became Scoil na nAingeal Naofa.
Campus 2: Abbeytown(formerly St. Josephs BNS)
The Presentation Brothers came to Boyle in the month of August 1897.The foundation stone was laid in September 1902 for the new Monastery School and it was opened on June 1st 1904 in Mockmoyne. The site is now home to Carty’s Garage. The foundation stone of the school is incorporated into the new garage building. Brother Celsus Mc Carthy was the first Superior of the school. The school was a two storey building and was well suited for educational purposes. The Brothers continued to teach in Boyle until July 31st 1918.
The school then was taken over by the Diocese of Elphin and became St. Joseph’s National School. In 1955 Boyle's first secondary school opened upstairs in St Joseph's National School with eighteen pupils on roll. The secondary school remained in the building until 1956 when it had 80 on roll.
When the Secondary School moved to a new location a factory began to operate upstairs in the school. As the factory expanded it was decided to move the primary school to a new location.
While the present Abbeytown Campus building was being built the school was in temporary accommodation in Clewes Hall and also in prefabs on the Convent of Mercy grounds. Eventually, in the early seventies, St Joseph's moved to its site in Abbeytown with the new school opening in 1971 and the extension which included a P.E. hall opened in 1977.
Up until amalgamation in 2023, the Carrick Road campus had mixed boys and girls up until first class. After 1st class the boys transitioned to St. Joseph's Boys School where they continued their primary education until 6th. The girls remained in Scoil na nAingeal Naofa to complete their primary education.
In 2023, the boys and girls schools amalgamated under the new name of Abbey Primary School. The pupils are now split between the two campuses: Junior infant - 3rd class pupils are taught on Carrick Road, whilst 4th - 6th classes are taught on the Abbeytown campus.
Both campuses are close to the banks of the beautiful Boyle River, and a short walk from the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey ' Boyle Abbey' , with the Curlew Mountains as a backdrop.
