We joined members of Timbwani Beach Management Unit at Shelly beach, off Likoni for an early morning beach clean-up and got treated to an enchanting sunrise. Marine debris include, among others, plastic waste, ghost nets and municipal waste. They cause physical, chemical and biological harm to marine life some of which come back to haunt us through contaminated sea foods or loss of aesthetic beauty. We urge all our members, neighbors and clients not to litter the beach and to use designated disposal bins.
28th August 2018
As the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) concludes the Africa Climate Outlook conference in Kigali, Rwanda, leaders remain silent on the fragile state of seagrass as well as their proven role in the climate change era. We are displeased with the continued exclusion of seagrass conservation in the agenda. Seagrass declines will certainly undermine Africa's efforts to combat climate change. Should we chose to conserve them, we gain the advantage of tackling CO2 emissions, acidification, shoreline erosion, loss of marine biodiversity, vulnerability of coastal livelihoods and loss of aesthetic beauty. On behalf of all African citizens we wish to petition IGAD to take concrete steps towards seagrass conservation. To join visit our Facebook (Kisiwani Conservation Network) and Twitter (@kisiwanicbo1) accounts.
21st- 27th October 2018
In this year's lead poisoning prevention week of action, we want to tap into the informal networks through which we formulate, buy and use paints. Within these networks lies the power to build lasting commitments to the new standards by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to cap lead levels in paint to 90 parts per million (ppm). Join us huko mtaani as we reach property owners, artisans and traders with the message "I'll be care-free even in my 90s".
10th - 11th September 2018
Each year thousands of beach clean-ups are organized and they all collect tons of plastics among other wastes. Often times, however, more tons will have returned back to these beaches by nightfall. The waste brand audit examines the companies whose products feature prominently in marine litter/debris. These findings provide evidence to evaluate weaknesses in waste management practices, infrastructure or law. The message is then communicated to responsible waste generators to reform and, where necessary, bear the costs of clean-up and rehabilitation.
Join us on these dates as we challenge producers not to profit from pollution.
6th - 8th October, 2018
Civil society organizations and UNDP-SGP representatives in Africa meet at Lusaka, Zambia to share experiences in curbing mercury sources in products. We are pleased to have made our contribution to a global process that might have multiple benefits not only in managing mercury pollution, but in addressing other emissions, socioeconomic and governance. We appreciate the European Environmental Bureau for the support to attend.
